And while the school. safety pro- grams are a vital part of the job, the community services officer is also responsible for personal contact . with all public groups and organi ations. Since 1966, the purpose and function of the community services division has been to foster public interest and awareness in safety, crime prevention, and general res- pect for law and authority. Last week, Staff-Sgt. Denis Robson of OPP headquarters in Toronto was in Whitby to explain the functions of the community services officers to a group of policemen from the OPP and Durham Region. Through the community services division, the force is constantly working to im- prove public attitudes to- wards the police, and in one respect at least it seems to be working. Last year for example, the community services branch received almost $3 million in a variety of donations from the public to be used by the force to carry out its public relations functions. This is almost ten times the amount "spent by the force itself on these funétions. What you see: Sharp's perfect colour TV.
