IT'S ALWAYS WORTH THE TRIP TO ' PH | L PONTIAC-BUICK LIMITED 150 WATER STREET PORT PERRY, ONTARIO 985-7309 10 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, Dec. 14, 1977 or CH SO FRAN Feit Pe Cl Big Brother Rolly Coy and Little Brother Billy Foote were dressed.for the weather Saturday morn. ing, as they did the chores at the Coy farm south of Big Brothers providing continued from page 1 ~ character references and a medical report. Only after this process has been completed is an attempt made to match the Little Brother and the Big Brother. Dr. Stewart point- ed out that the Big Brothers organization stresses "'Qual- ity matches' because poten- tial harm can be done to both the man and the boy if it is found later on that the . two are not getting along. This experience may turn the Big Brother off the organization, and the youngster may feel a sense of rejection from all older men. Once a relationship is es- tablished the two get to- gether at least once a week for any number of activities. While the Big Brother may get some supervision for specific things from the organization, the boy and the man are left pretty much on their own as far as planning activities and outings. The organization stresses the one-to-one contact between the Big and Little Brother. Once the boy turns sixteen, the relationship with the Big Brother is formally ended. But there are many cases of the friendship which de- . veloped between the Big and Little Brother carrying on long after that, often for a lifetime. ROLLY AND BILLY Rolly-Coy and Billy Foote are one "match" which has . worked out very well for the local organization. They have been together as Big and' Little Brother for well over a year now, and during the-summer and on week- ends Billy spends a lot of time at the farm near Port Perry where Mr. Coy has a herd of pure-bred Herefords. "Billy does just about everything around hére. He is very interested 'in the 1) ATS TH (SIF boys companionship farm, and he likes to work with his hands," said Mr. Coy in an interview last week. 'We have got along very well." As he said this, Billy, who is in grade seven, nodded in agreeement. Billy's other big interest these days is hockey, and he plays left wing on a Pee Wee team that has only lost one game so far this year. PASSIVE ADVERTISING The very nature of the Big Brothers organization is a sensitive one in many respects. Dr. Stewart point-- ed out that the organization tries to attract potential Little Brothers through what he called 'passive advertising." "We certainly don't. go knocking on anybody's doors," he said. Some re- ferrals come to the: organi- zation from the mothers of the young boys, others from the schools. But Dr. Stewart indicated that the best kind of advertising the "organization can get is from a Little Brother who is happy, and one who will let his friends and school-mates know that he is. This is another reason why the screening and matching process is such an import- ant one. The Big Brothers organi- zation was founded in the States as a way of trying to help boys who had been in trouble with the law, It has . since grown much 'larger, and is active in all provinc- es including the Territories. Its purpose is how to simply try to be a friend to any boy who does not have a father to look up to. If anybody is interested in the Big Brothers, the local organization gets together twice each month at the Cornish Public School in Port Perry for gym activities such as floor hockey and basketball. Ve SAA RE Aiea Stade 0 BOBS Highway 7A. Rolly and Billy were "matched" by the % local Big Brother Association more than a year ago and the ""match" has proved to be a good one.
