» MARE ------------ a A " ' $e Flu Bug Bites Scugog Residents Aches! Pains! Coughi Feeling a little under the weather lately? Are you coughing, sneezing, running a fever and aching all over? If so,.you're not alone. The flu and the Eold bug have hit residents of Scugog Township over the Christ- mas season with a venge- ance. an In a brief interview with the Star last week Dr. John* Stewart of Port Perry said the situation is not exactly of epidemic proportions, but he did admit that doctors have been busy in the last couple of weeks treating patients down with the colds and the flu. There seem to be two ailments making the rounds: the first caused by a virus brings on a sore throat, coughing, heavy chest, sneezing and the sniffles. It usually lasts from four days to a week. The second is described by Dr. Stewart as a typical flu bug, accompanied by a general blah feeling, fever, aches, and pains all over the body, nausea and gastro-intestinal upset. This too usually lingers for "about a week. The treatment for the first ailment is rest, an in- creased intake of fluids, and aspirin for .the aches and pains. A strong cough syrup will help the throat and one of the better brands is the yellow Triaminic Expector- ant available without pre- scription at a drug store. For those down with the Eo . flu, plenty of rest is again prescribed as a treatment, along with fluids and aspirin- or 222's for the aches and pains. Young children hit with BE ng! Sneez WRIST Sa the bug may react with high fever and vomiting, and these symptoms could also be the result of infected ears or throats. Depending on the child's medical his- tory and the individual case, a doctor may pre- scribe anti-biotics for the infections. Dr. Stewart said that the family - physician should be contacted if the ~ ADULT EVENING - PROGRAM Port Perry High School COURSES COMMENCE TUES., JANUARY 10 20 Hours - $12.50 BRIDGE - Beginner to Intermediate GUITAR - Beginner to Intermediate C.B. He added that if a parent has any doubt, it would be wise to at least phone the family doctor for - advice. Is there any way to avoid the cold and flu bugs when they make the rounds of the community? Well, one could go south to an isolated island in the Caribbean. But if that is not possible Dr. Stewart suggests that a proper diet, lots of rest and regular exercise are prob- ably the best ways for the body to fight the viruses: Anti-cold shots are avail- able, and although they may offer some protection, it is something of a hit and miss process. They are designed to combat a cer- tain kind of virus and if a person comes into contact with a different type of vir- us, their effectiveness may be lost. However, people with a history of other more serious diseases, or those who may be highly suscept- ible to the common flu and cold viruses are advised to take the shots. As for the rest of us? Well, if you haven't got the bug yet, stay away from those who do. And if you are down with it, take two aspirins, drink -plenty- of fluids 'and curl up in bed with a couple of those travel brochures showing photos of a white sand beach and sunny palm trees swaying gently in the soft tropical trade winds.
