16 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, Jan. 25, 1978 Sports Port Hope easy target Flamingos trounce Panthers twice Port Perry Flamingos played give and take hockey for two periods in Junior C action at the New Scugog Arena Sunday/night. » Fortunately for the Flamingos, they took a little more than they gave and wound up with a 13-9 victory over the hapless Port Hope Panthers. The victory, coupled with an 8-4 win over the same Port Hope team last Thurs- day night, keeps Flamingos in the dog fight for second place with Stouffville Clip- pers. In "a rather lack-lustre affair Sunday night against' Port Hope, a nine goal out- burst in the second period proved the margin of vic- tory for Flamingos. For the remainder of the game Flamingos exerted them- selves just enough to keep ahead of the weak "Port Hope squad. . Doug Christie, in his fourth game after joining the club two weeks ago, led Flamingos with three goals and three assists while Phil Cochrane continued his scoring ways with a hat trick and two assists. Bill Bridge also popped in three goals and came close on 'a couple of other occassions. Brad Nicholson chipped in with three assists and a goal, and Trend Mood counted three assists. After Christie opened the scoring 42 seconds into the game, Port Hope threatened to make a game of it as they went ahead 3-1 on goals by Battersby, Beer and Watts. A power play goal by Phil Cochrane narrowed the margin and then Bill Bridge tied it with _ 49 sedonds left in the first period. "Bridge started the second period onslaught in the opening minute on a set-up from Phil Cochrane. After Port Hope tied the score four minutes later, Mike Adams put Flamingos ahead for good at the 5:23 mark. Adams, who return- ed to action after being off for a couple of games with a leg injury saw duty on the left wing and his goal came . after a persistent effort in front of the Port Hope net. Flamingos then went on to pop in seven unanswered goals to lead 12-5 after 40 minutes of play. Port Hope scored four goals in the third period, but it was too little, too late, as the game was already well beyond their reach. Rob Evans and Len Thornbury with a short- handed effort late in the third period were the other Flamingo marksmen. - The 22 goals scored -dur- - ing the game are a pretty good indication that the de- fense and goal-tenders on both sides did not have a good evening. Neither team seemed particularly intent on protecting the net in their own end. The game was a rather tame one with both sides called for seven minors. Flamingos played without four regulars as Dave Nicholson is out for two games after he was thrown from the game in Port Hope Thursday night for an un- complimentary remarks to the referee. Trent Mood paced Flam- ingos to the 84 win with two goals and three assists, while Christie, Brad Nicol- son, John Kane, Rob Evans, Sandy Cameron and Dave Nicholson added singletons. The win Sunday night gives Port Perry 38 points in the standings, the same number as Stouffville. The Clippers, however, have played two fewer games. continued on page 17 Stouffville defeat Atoms victories in two games. by Carol Wilbur On Thursday, Jan. 19, the Malmont Farm boys played Stouffville and were soundly defeated 9-2.
