The executives of these organi- zations spend a good deal of additional time helping carry on the business of the organization during the year. It is only through the capable and active leader- ship of interested farmers in various. commodity groups, agricultural organi- zations, Junior Farmers, 'and other groups that effec- tive programs can be.carr- ied on. The Durham Junior Farmers held their annual meeting and Curling Fun Day on Sunday, February 12th, at which time mem- bers had the opportunity to The Farm Scene HOLSTEIN CLUB ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Ontario County Holstein Club was held in the Township Hall, Manchester, on Saturday, January 28th, with approximately 80 pro- ducers in attendance. ' The guest speaker on this occasion was Mr. Bruce Reid, President of the Holstein Friesian Association of Canada. Mr. Reid spoke on the activities of the parent association during the past year, and particularly emphasized the need to maintain exports of high quality to the markets that have been established. Dr. Robert McCrae, Veterinarian, Port Perry, reported on the brucellosis situation, and explained the revised brucellosis control programme that has been instituted by the Health of Animals Branch. Dr. McCrae encouraged breeders to take advantage of the opportunity to enroll their herds for the brucellosis free listing programme. Also taking part in the programme was Mr. Robert Flett of Oshawa, National Director for this area. Mr. Flett reported on the activities of the parent associ- ation, and particularly mentioned the need for additional revenue if the parent association is to maintain its present level of service to producers. Others, who spoke briefly, were G. E. Nelson, Agricultural Representative. . Directors - Ross Evans, R.R.4, Uxbridge; Rob McKay, R.R.4, Port Perry; John Stone, R.R.5, Sunderland; Bert VanDyk, R.R.7, Orillia; Robert Smith, R.R.2, Port Perry; Dennis Werry, R.R.2, Oshawa; Wayne Down, R.R.1, Sunder- land. Among the projects planned for 1978 is the Annual Banquet which will be held this year in the Port Perry High School on Thursday, February 16th, at which time Whipper Billy Watson. will be the guest speaker. Tickets will be $6.00 per person with 4-H members at half price. Tickets are available from club directors and at the Agricultural Office in Uxbridge. Other activities will include a bus trip on Tuesday, March 21st, and a car tour to visit local breeders on Thursday, April 6th. The Annual Twilight Meeting will be at the farm of Neil Raines, but the date has not as yet been established, ONTARIO COUNTY MILK PRODUCERS' - ANNUAL MEETING: ~ Ontario County Milk Producers held their annual meeting in the Township Hall, Sunderland, on the evening of Monday, January 30th, with an excellent attendance of interested producers. The main concern among many producers appears to be the lack of sufficient market share quota to cover their milk shipments for the remainder of the present dairy year. The guest speaker, Mr. Howard Shepherd, mem- - ber of the Ontario Milk Marketing Board for this area, urged all producers to examine their situation, and any producers, who will have more. quota than they need, are urged to make it available for loan to producers who require it. A producer must market at least 90 per cent of his market share quota to avoid losses of quota for next year. Lending or borrowing of quota must be done before the end of February. Twelve producers in the county received certifi- cates for quality and farm score during the past year as follows: Ivan Cox, R.R.2, Uxbridge; Leslie J. Harbron, R.R.1, Ashburn; Marinus Verhoog, R.R.2 Sunderland; Jerry Kea, R.R.2, Woodville; Gordon Kea, R.R.1, Beaverton; Loa-De-Mede Farm, R.R.2, Oshawa;John L. French, R.R.2, Uxbridge; John Warren, R.R.7, Orillia; Patrick J. Clark, R.R.7, Lamb, R.R.4, Port Perry; Mac & Grant Mustard, R.R.2, Uxbridge. - : ' The top producer in the group, Mr. Ivan Cox, was awarded the Lynn Fair Trophy. Holstein Friesian Association Fieldman, and Ivan Bell, - try out their skills in curling before taking part in the election of an executive for the upcoming year. Ruth Kellogg, RR 1, Port Hope was elected President of the Junior Farmer organization in Durham for 1978. First Vice-President will be Lois VanCamp, RR 1 Blackstock, and second Vice-President is Kevin McKeen, Garden Hill. Secretary for the up- coming year is Karen Ashton of Oshawa, and the Treasurer is Dale VanCamp of Blackstock. The 1978 Provincial _ Director to Ontario. Junior Farmer Association will be John Larmer of Blackstock, with the alternate being Dave Kellogg, RR 1, Port Hope. Newsletter editors for the upcoming year are: Sue Best, Hampton; Mary Lou Malcolm and Barry Van- Camp of Blackstock. Any young people between the ages of 15 and 30 as of January 1st, this year and who are interested in a youth program with a wide range of activities should get in touch with one of these . people regarding membership in the 1978 Durham Junior Farmer program. Membership deadline is May 1st, how- ever, if you do plan on joining, you can do so now and take part in a number of the remaining winter activities. The executive and direc- tors of the 1978 Durham Soil 'and Crop Improvement Association will be holding their Annual Planning Meet- ing on Friday, February 24th, at the Agricultural office, Bowmanville. Under President, Glenn Larmer of Blackstock, the directors will be establishing pro- grams for the upcoming year in the overall Soil and Crop field. Reports will be given on the Provincial Annual Meeting that was held recently in Toronto, as well as, a report on the East Central. Farm Conference that was held in January. In addition, the directors will establish what Crop Improvement projects should be undertaken in the upcoming year, and at the same time, select co-opera- tors who will participate in these projects. The Durham Milk Com- mittee held their annual meeting on February 6th, at the Orono I.0.0.F. Hall with 75 Milk Producers from across the county in attend- ance. Mr. Grant Smith, the Vice-Chairman of the Ontar- io Milk Marketing Board was the guest speaker for thé program, and he outlin- ed some of the concerns and problem areas of the Ontar- io Milk Marketing Board and the Dairy Industry are facing and will be facing in the upcoming year. Many producers had questions as to what was going to happen with Market Share Quotas in the upcoming diary year, and what changes might be made in overall dairy policy. that would have a positive effect on the dairy industry. Mr. Smith pointed out that there are a number of prob- lems which can be over- come but at the same time, many things especially with regards to the imports of cheese and other diary products are ones that are going to take a good deal of more discussion = before answers will be obtained. Directors were, elected at the Annual Meeting of the Milk Producers and the directors then held a meet- TOWNSHIP OF SCUGOG ing on Monday, February 13th, at which time their new chairman was selected for the upcoming year. Neil Allin, RR 1, Orono will act as Chairman of the Durham Milk Committee, with Don Welsh, RR 4, Bowmanville as Vice-chairman. The Secretary for 1978 is Fran- : cis Jose, Newcastle, and the Diary Princess co-ordinator is Mrs. Tom Barrie, RR 4, Bowmanville. John Wolters, Blackstock was appointed as the Milk Producers representative to the Farm Labour Board, and will serve in this capacity for 1978. Man injured - Downsview OPP are con- tinuing their investigation into the cause of a single car mishap on highway 401 Saturday afternoon which sent a Blackstock man to hospital in Etobicoke. A spokesman for the de- tachment said that Warren Dale Peel, 29, of Blackstock was found in his burning car beside 401 near Dixon BUSINESS DIRECTORY Road in Toronto. He was taken to hospital with undis- closed injuries and on Mon- day a hospital spokesman said he was in satisfactory condition. The car, a 1970 Vega, was on the westbound shoulder of the road, and the interior completely destroyed by fire when police arrived on the scene.
