The enthusiasm of the bonspiel brought to mind the many months of com- munity effort that put the artificial ice in the Black- stock arena. It began with an artificial ice committee. Thirty people were sent out to canvass for personal donations: A dance and Monte Carlo night was held as a fund raiser. Many contestants" at the Annual tractor pull gave their purse to the ice fund. For two Sundays Blackstock was fill- ed with the aroma of maple syrup and sausages. Many dedicated people slaved over the hot grill to prepare the ¢ Pancake Breakfasts. It was grand to see the community spirit bubble up in Black- stock as everyone. reached for the same- $18,000 goal. When this goal was reached it would be matched by a Wintario Grant. The bottom line budget of $60,000. was used in no time at all and' many more improvements are needed for the rink. Where will this money come from? Merrill VanCamp, campaign manager, would like to inform the public that ~ Merrill Van Camp [left] skipped his rink of Merlin Suggitt, Bill Thompson and Dalton Dorrell to victory in the Blackstock Men's Curling Bonspiel held at the Blackstock Arena last Thursday. Photo by Beth Schryburt rr | > al gam Thursday Bonspiel; fund raising is not over yet as Wintario will match any money we provide for the improvement of the rink. There is also a Lommunity Centre Grant which will continue to match the funds 25 percent. The Township kicked in close to $10,000. but most of that was used to bring the structure of the building up to the standards set by the government. There are still many im- provements to go, painting, dressing room and insulation just to name a few. A new committee has been set up as of November for the purpose of running the rink. Most of the same members of the old committee are still there anc Neil McLaughlin has joined the 'force'. ~ There was a lot of unseen work and money that poured in as most of the men in the community . offered- their spare time as free labor for the Construction of the system. The ice seemed to be off to a slow start or maybe Black- stock was just over anxious. The benefit to the commun- ity is fantastic, ice skating, curling, and even hockey, so our hat goes off to the unseen workers and the committee for without the community effort that artificial ice wouldn't be here yet. Now to get back to the there weren't quite enough men available during the week so a rink of women, Cheryl Vogel, Pat Fletcher, Annie Frank Hoskin and Lawrence McLaughlin keep a close eye on the rock and -are poised to sweep it in during a game in the Men's Bonspiel held in Blackstock. so 'We invite you ... to watch two of the most amazing programs on fele- vision to-day. Densil Moore, president of the Curling Club, presented Ist place winners Skip 'Merrill. VanCamp, Merlin Suggitt, Bill Thompson, and Dalton Dorrell with a 'duck' each (we were on a tight budget). Second place winners, Skip Herb Swain, Murray Byers, Roy Werry, and Perry Grandell received a chicken each. The booby prize, what else, polish saus- age went to Floyd Argue, Don Wright, Glen Grove and J. Wright. } It was a full day. Barry VanCamp went home with several bandages for his sweeping blisters. Everyone was tired, but all enjoyed the day, and everyone was glad the community had worked - to achieve putting artificial ice in Blackstock. Dalton Dorrell, chairman of the committee, provided every- one with chetldar cheese and an exquisite _homemade apple juice. The season has just begun but 'will be over too soon as the Curling Banquet is set for April 1st: Next year the season will be longer and some people in Blackstock might even get their fill of 'curling'.
