18-- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, Mar. 22, 1978 Sports Bantams reach Ontario finals PeeWees ready for consolation finals by Todd Wilbur On Wed., March 15 the Beare Motors boys played Schomberg for the second . game of the semi-finals. Port cam out flying like they did in the first game and defeated Schomberg 6-2. Port scored 5 straight goals in 'the first two periods before - Schomberg could react. he! Brian Dickson got th home side going at 8:36 of the first period on a smooth wrist shot in the left hand side of the net. Donny Young then scored on a three banger from Todd Wilbur to Bob Horton to Young, who popped it easily into the net. Pat Johnson then scored on a pass from Brian Mikkelson and Todd Blayone to give Port a 3-0 lead. : Al Jones got his six-pack for the year on a booming slap-shot assisted by Todd Wilbur and Bob _Horton. Todd Wilbur then scored on a pass from Bob Horton and Brian Dickson. Schomberg scored to close out the period at 5-1. Schomberg scored early in the third to give Port a score but Clay Lovering didn't think so as he stopped Schomberg cold on many occasions. Al Jones added another one to his six pack when he scored to close out the scoring assisted by Todd "Wilbur and Bob Horton. Saturday, March 18 the Beare Motors boys advanc- ed to the All-Ontario Finals for the second year in a row by soundly defeating Schom- berg 7-3. Port just out played . Mark 'Lar' Jeffrey having a big game scored from Todd Wilbur, Pat Johnson .scored from Mark Jeffrey, Pat scored again assisted by Bob Horton who received a pass from goaltender Clay Lovering, . Brian Dickson scored from a rebound of Todd Wilburs. Schomberg scored twice before Port ended the scoring on a goal by Brian Dickson again assisted by Mark Jeffrey. Three veterans of last years team remember "the thrill of victory" of an All- Ontario Championship and rookies of last years Pee Wee team remember "the agony of defeat'. Dean Smith replied for Wes Lane with Harry Sillen and Dean Haugen assisting. This was the last meet- ing of this year, and club president Harvey Graham -described it as the "wind-up of a very successful season." Recent club events have included a trail ride to Bewdley, a trip to Bobcay- geon and a day spent enter- taining a Cub Pack from Oshawa. The Dyno's are planning an "end of season" dance on April 8th at the Black- stock Centre. Music will be provided by 'Sweet Ren- dition". Tickets are avail- able at the Country Store in Nestleton or The annual convention for the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs is being held in Barrie on April 14, 15 and 16. Every club in Ontario which belongs to the Federation is allowed to send two voting delegates to - the convention, and Warren Rohrer and Rick Brooks will be representing the - Dyno's. "On Sunday, the 19th, Stone Real Estate Pee Wees travelled to Elmvale to par- ticipate in the Elmvale Tournament. Port Perry played well in game one even though they came out on-the losing end, 4-2. 'In the first' period there was no scoring with Stones having a slight territorial edge. Midland opened the scoring at 1:30 of the second period. Port were quick to reply, within a minute Steve Dehaas scored with a fine shot from the point. Mid- land were hard pressed until the end of the period when Port ran into some penalties, allowing the op- position to score twice. In the final period Stones were soon on the scoresheet with a fine effort from Gregg, Williams assisted by Desau- tels. Port seemed to have the upper hand until late in the period when they again run into more penalties. This enabled Midland to score an insurance goal with only2:45 remaining. Port made every effort to come back but just could not put the puck in the net. In game two, Stones oppos- ition were from Thornbury. ; The local boys knew the Thornbury sweaters, having borrowed them in the Thornbury Tournament. This was a good effort with the Port lads coming out on top 6-0 to gain a place in the Consolation _ final. Port dominated play in the first period on goals by Darren Desautels (2), Vaughan Mc- Kee (1) with assists to Dickson, Dehaas, Ferguson, Cleveland, Williams and Desautels. In the second period it was all Port Perry again. Scoring in this per- iod were Kevin Fowler, Darren Desautels and Gregg Williams with assists to Williams, Stevenson, Dickson, Lee, Dehaas, and Dickson. again. The third period was scoreless with Port more intent on protect- ing the shutout than scor- ing. This was accomplished with goalies Paul Bateman and Paul Kingston register- ing the shut-out. .Coach Bob Young must have discussed penalties with the local boys after the first game with 'Port only recording 2 to the other teams eight. Well done, congratula- tions and good luck in the finals on Sunday. Lunch will be provided.
