For Barbara Swatuk of Kleinburg, Ontario there is no doubt that cancer re- search has saved her life. Eleven years ago, her con- stant fatique led to the diagnosis of acute lymp- hocytic leukemia at Toronto's Sick Children's hospital. Barbara is a nor- "mal, happy 23 year old now. She didn't grow up with the worry of living with the disease, because her family never put a label on her illness nor was she ever hospitalized for more than six weeks at a time. Some parts of the Dur- ham plan have been referr- ed to the Ontario Municipal Board for approval, and a few sections have been de- ferred by the minister for future considerations. The minister has also in- troduced a number of modi- fications to the regional plan including a change in the designation of the North Pickering project area in the northwest portion: of Durham region from a "study area' to an "urban community". The Durham official plan is the first stage in a long- range planning process that will eventually be supple- mented by district plans for the component area muni- cipalaities. 5 Year Guaranteed Investment Certificates doctors told her of her AA SF Rd vet Sd rd y fT RY XA disease - she was shocked to fin out how serious her problem had been - she thought she had had a blood disorder. Today the drugs given-to leukemia patients are the same ones as in the 1960's, but the method is different. Research has shown the way to more effective treat- ment. As short a time ago as 1965 the average survival rate with hemo-therapy was 12-18 months. Today 50 percent of these young patients live 5 years or more. Some have lived 15 and 20 years and may be considered cured. Therapy in childhood leukemia is very effective but we are a long way from prevention of the disease. The National Cancer Insti- tute of Canada, a sister organization of the Canad- ian Cancer Society, is doing a great deal of work on leukemia - spending more than a million and a half dollars a year on leukemia research.
