Novice end season in Otonobee tournament by Doreen Kendall The Mersco's finished off their season in fine style at the Otonobee Novice Tourn- ament on Saturday, April 1st. In the opening gawe the i 'boys in Orange came, up against a fired-up team from Sterling. At the end of the first period the score was 2 to 0 for Sterling. Up until the 43 second mark of the 2nd period, Sterling led the way. Then captain Dave Burnett scored unassisted. This was the lift the boys needed and from there on in, it was. catch-up hockey all the way. With 1 minute and 23 second left to play in the game, Port pulled its goalie, and Dave Burnette, assisted by Ray Daniels found the mark once again. The goalie was returned to his crease and _ with 30 seconds left in regul- ation time, Bobbie Goble, assisted by Dave Burnett and Michael Gibson broke the tie. The second game pitted Port Perry against a big fast team from Belleville and the boys in Orange rose to the occasion and dropped this team 2to 0. The shut-out was shared by Steve Whalen and Mark Kendall. The Mersco's played their best game of the year. Ports goals were scored the Bobby Goble assisted by Michael Gibson and by Steve Durham unassisted. The Championship round for the gold medal saw Port Perry meet up against Lind- say, this was truly the game of the tournament. The first period remained scoreless with both teams giving the game all they had. Lindsay scored twice -in the second period and the crunch was on. The Mersco's never stopped for a moment and at the 6:58 mark of the second period Michael Gibson found the mark assisted by Dave Burnett. Lindsay retaliated with another goal and in the dying seconds of the game, Bobbie Goble found the mark once again for Port.
