The 16 were selected from more than 60 students at the High School who entered projects under categories in the physical and biological sciences. They put a great deal of time and effort into prepar- ing and presenting the pro- jects, making the judges' task of selecting the win- ners a difficult one. The following are the first, second and third place winners for their projects in the physical sciences cate- gory: First - Claudia Lieb- scher for a project on freon and its effect on the ozone layer. Second: David Van Weston, and Kathy Stapely for a project on light, waves and particl- es. Third - A three way tie between Tom Muirhead and Richard Holy for a project on wind power; Mary Rose for a project on soap; and Lea Dowson and Leslie McNutty for a project on steam. . The following are winners in the biological sciences category: . First - Mary McKelvrey and Leanne Kerr a project on biological clocks. Second - Lisa Nottingham for water transport in car- nations. Honourable Mention - Jenni- fer Simmonds and Ann Tap- scott for their project on hydroponics. Obituary Wilbur Toms Mr. Wilbur Toms passed away in Oshawa General Hospital on Thursday, March 23, 1978 after an ill- ness of five weeks. Born in Cartwright Town- ship on March 6, 1901, William Wilbur Northcutt John was the son of the late John and Ann (Vance) Toms. : He lived all his life in the Purple Hill area and attend- ed Purple Hill School. On November 3, 1928 he marr- ied the former Elva Kath- leen Darcy. Mr. Toms who had a sterling character was a devoted husband, father and neighbour. He was a life- long farmer who enjoyed every aspect of life and work to the fullest. He was a faithful member of Bethel Church and later Black- stock United Church. He is survived by his wife, Elva and three daughters, Eileen (Mrs. Harold McLaughlin), -Helen (Mrs. Stewart Dorrell), and Wilma (Mrs. Keith Van- Camp) and twelve grand- children, and a sister, Flor- ence (Mrs. Courtney Gra- ham). He was predeceased by a grandson Robert Mec- Laughlin in 1968, a sister Annie in 1911, and a brother } Fred in 1961. : The funeral was held on Monday March 27 from the McDermott-Panabaker Funeral Chapel. -- - His minister, Rev. Victor Par- sons conducted the largely attended service. Inter- ment was in Prince Albert Pine Grove Cemetery. The pall bearers were his only nephew Harvey Gra- ham and neighbours: Don Swain, Cecil Gibson, Don Green, Murray Byers and Sandy Moore.
