Port Perry has been busy recreat- ing the Battle of Waterloo. He's doing it with model soldiers - almost 300 so far - and the display in the spare room of his home depicts the regiments and formations of the British, Belgian, Prus- sian and French troops who faced each other in one of the world's most famous mili- tary battles on June 18, 1815. Mr. Kingstone has done much more than simply line up the model soldiers in the formations of infantry, cava- Iry and artillery. ~~ Using books on military history as a reference he has meticu- lously hand-painted each of the pieces in their colourful regimental uniforms. Talking about his unusual hobby last week, Mr. King- stone said he can't estimate the exact number of hours he has spent painting the model soldiers. But it has been a labour of love. Now in his middle fifties, he has collect- ed model soldiers since he was a young boy in England, and still has some of the pieces from his boyhood. He says he has always been a student of history, and one reason he chose to recreate the Battle of Waterloo is that it was one of the last battles where the troops wore colourful and picturesque uniforms. "Those worn in World War 2 were pretty drab by com- parison," he says. Curiously enough Mr. Kingstone is not a military man. In fact, he has never been in the service. As an active farmer during the last war in his native England he was exempt from the service, a fact, he says, which upset him at the time. Altogether some 30,000 troops took part in the Battle of Waterloo. Mr. Kingstone says he plans to keep adding to his battle scene until he has about 600 pieces, all painted 'and in formation.
