Mean charged for defrauding UIC A Port Perry man was fined $800 and ordered to make restitution for $1000, after he pleaded guilty in Oshawa court last week to four charges of defrauding the Unemployment Insur- ance Commission. Richard Appleton pleaded guilty to the charge of filing false statements with UIC and collecting $998 during an eight week period in the fall of 1976. During that time he was working for a construct- ion company and earned $2500. Court was told that none of the money has been re-paid yet, but arrangements have been made for Appleton to make payments of $50 per month. He was given 90 days to pay the $800 in fines ($200 on each of the four charges) or the alternative of 14 days in jail on each charge. In addition he was placed on probation for two years. Sidewalks for 7A Continued from page 1 ation adopted will mean a new stretch of about 150 feet of sidewalk along the north side-of 7A to connect the existing sidewalk to the rear entrance into R.H. Cornish Public School. In addition, the council decided that the present school guard crossing at Simcoe Street and Highway 7A will be moved to the approximate location of the rear entrance into the pub- lic school. There has been public concern expressed in recent weeks about the safety of young school children cross- ing Highway 7A in the area - of the school entrance with- out supervision. It was generally agreed among councillors that moving the crossing guard from the present duty at Simcoe Street to the rear entrance of the school was acceptable in that the inter- section of Simcoe and 7A presents a hazard because it is'at the top of a hill and visibility for motorists is reduced. The work is expected to be done this summer. It seems that people al- ways applaud a good loser as long as the money comes their way. H | Remember When Continued Mr. J. D.
