Last week a reader from just north of Port Perry brought in to the office a plastic post card with a small piece of string attach- ed and what looks like the remains of a yellow balloon. The address on the card is that of a Mr. John Corfield c-o0 of a school in Southfield Michigan. We are assuming that the card and-balloon were sent aloft as some kind of school project to find out just how far afield the winds might carry them. So, to find out more about what the school kids in Southfield had in mind, we wrote to Mr. Corfield. If he replies, we'll pass the infor- mation on to our readers. - The Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps (Port Perry) will be holding its annual inspection and open house at Port Perry High School on April 26. The public is invited to watch the march-past and inspection of the 35-member corps, and view displays on such things as first aid, compass and map reading, and rifle practise in the basement range. The inspection, which gets underway at 7:00 p.m. will mark the 82nd consecutive year for the Port Perry Corps, which makes it one of the oldest organizations in this area. "GRANT MENZIES MOTORS 1250 Dundas St. E., Whitby ¥ 0 YN ENE EL TY YU AAAARKN ST Rr 128-2822 Parking fines go up to $5 Continued from page 1 out are ignored. In order to collect this means the owner of the vehicle must be traced through the provincial regis- try office in Toronto. Then a trip to Oshawa is necessary so that a Justice of the Peace can sign the necessary papers to get the culprit into court, which in most cases results in convictions. How- ever, Mr. Kenny pointed out that the $2 fine scarcely covers the costs of this lengthy process. Mr. Kenny also questioned whether more '"'no parking" signs are needed so that more tickets could be issued, especially in the area of the liquor store on Mary Street and at the intersection of Water and Casimir Streets. He implied that if the coun- cillors want to see more revenue from parking infractions, they will have to designate more 'no' park- ing' areas within Port Perry. He also asked whether there should be stricter enforcement of the parking meters on Water Street and in the parking area of Palmer Park. Council took no action on increasing the number - of - "no parking' areas or on the issue of stepping up enforce- ment. However, the council did pass a motion asking the Attorney General's depart- ment to appoint a Justice of the Peace with full powers for Scugog Township so the violators who refuse to pay their parking fines can be served with court notices without . a Township employee having to make the trip to Oshawa. Councillor Vern Asselstine voted against the increase to $5, saying he wold like to see it left at $2 if the ticket was paid in full within a certain time limit. He said the purpose of the fines is to act as a deterrent and to help control the movement of traffic. If motorists start _ getting the higher fines, councillor Asselstine sugges ted it could end up ling people away from Port Perry. "If some guy gets two or three, he'll be going elsewhere to do his shop- ping," he said. on. Last Sunday was a special day for the Reesor family, when Mrs. Elma Vernon, on behalf of the Reesor's dedicated a new stain glass window to Port Perry United Church.
