Listed herd status enjoys advantages Cattlemen with Brucell- osis Free Listed Herds will enjoy many advantages over non-listed herd owners under the new brucellosis regulations, say Dr. -H.J. Neely of the Veterinary Services Branch, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food The new regulations 'con- cern eradication of this highly contagious disease which can cause abortion in cattle. "The Brucellosis Free Listed Herd was a popular program - some years ago, but its popularity diminish- ed due to the area certifica- tion program." To obtain a- listed status, herds must have two nega- tive blood tests not less than six months and not more. 'than one year apart. Once Three year anti rust listed status has been ob- tained, the herd must be tested each year at the owner's expense to main- tain the status of a Brucel- losis Free Listed Herd. Under the previous pro- gram, only herds of more . than 60 percent purebred cattle were eligible. Under the new program, all cattle- men may apply to have herds listed. Dr. Neely says this form of brucellosis control con- tinues to be most effective, and its popularity is being revitalized. With a Brucel- SA losis Free Listed Herd, the ea cattleman is in control of, and responsible for, his herd-testing program. Cattlemen with Brucell- osis Free Listed Herds, apart from knowing the herd is free from the dis- ease, have other advantag- es. } "This elite status allows cattlemen to sell their ani- mals, either at community sales or by private treaty, warranty General Motors of Canada today announced its imple- mentation of a three-year, anti-perforation corrosion warranty program for all 1978 model cars sold in Canada. Donald H. McPherson, GM President, said the warranty would provide protection to all owners of 1978 model cars, providing full coverage - for repair or replacement of any _ part, excluding. the exhaust system components, which develop metal perfor- ation from corrosion under normal operating conditions as described in the 1978 warranty information book- let. The warranty would be in effect for 36 months from the date the vehicle is deliv- ered to the customer or first put into use, and there would be no mileage limitations. All repairs due to defects in material or workmanship will continue to be coveréd by GM's 12 month or 20,000 kilometre warranty. without additional testing. It also facilitates the export of such cattle to the United States." Dr. Neely recommends farmers consult with pri- vate veterinarians regard- ing Brucellosis Free Listed Herds to learn more about the regulations and to arrange for blood testing.
