Last Monday night, Big Brother Week in Scugog was kicked-off with the annual banquet held at Port Tavern. Bill Deegan, radio announcer for CFRB was the guest speaker for the Jevening, and he related his 'many experiences with the Big Brother movement. Earlier in the evening, Big Brother president Eric Fletcher officially opened the ceremonies by present- ing this year's honourary chairman, Joel Aldred, with a plaque. Mr. Aldred said that until last year when he had been asked to do the colour commentary for the bed race, he never had much to do with the organ- ization, but would put all of his weight behind the activ- ities of the week for Scugog Big Brothers. Other plaques were also presented to Dr. John Stew- art, a past president and one of the founders of the Big Brothers of Scugog Dis- trict, for his work which was instrumental in the or- ganization getting started. Mr. Bill Deegan was also given a plaque as a momen- tum for coming to Port Perry to speak at the open- ing dinner. Frank Fogwell, executive vice president of the National Board spoke brief- ly and reminisced of his coming to Port Perry on January 15, 1976, to talk about having an organizat- ion started in the area. He congratulated the board on their tremendous enthusi- asm and concern and ended with a smile by saying, "Yours is the only organ- ization we know that have + their own place mats", referring to the Big Brother place mats on the tables. In an effort to help pay for the start-up costs and the signs from the national or- ganization, the Blackstock group is asking for financial assistance from service clubs jn the area, and from Scugog Township. A fund raising committee has been a set up by the organization and community events are being planned to raise addi- tional money. Mr. Shaver told the Star that the interest in the organ- ization came from people living in Blackstock and from many who live in the surrounding rural areas.
