Under clear skies and bright sun Monday afternoon, 20 teams pushed their beds up and down Queen Street in the Second Annual Big Brother Association Bed Race. As the afternoon and the heat wore on, it soon became apparent that the "young legs" in the com- petition were holding up under the strain and five members from the Aztecs Ball Hockey team finally captured the first prize. Captained by Paul Beare the team members numerous heats, as the whole idea of the Bed Race was to focus public attention on the Scugog Big Brother Association. Aside from a couple of beds that didn't quite stand up to the strain and a near miss or two along the curb, there were no serious mishaps. In a special challenge, the Scugog Big Brothers out-raced their - counterparts from Peel Region. included pushers Terry Henderson, Rob Kroonenberg, Al Faux, and rider Jay Neil. A close second behind the Aztecs was the team of Port Perry IGA with Rob Cook (captain), Willy McQuade, Vic Walker, Bob Parker and Leo Donnelly. Not only the fastest beds on wheels got recognition from the judges, however, as the "most vali- ant effort" went to the Nursing Home Pacemakers of Susan Luke, Heather Haliburton, Lorraine Wrig- ley and Denise Vinette. The boys from Hall One of the Scugog Fire Department got top marks for their "most unique bed", complete with flashing red light, siren and ladder on top. Don Steele, Al Armour, Dave Ballingall, Irv Gibson and Jim Rowett looked pretty good, anyway.
