PA APRA POPES No funds for Fire Code Scugog Township council Monday afternoon officially rejected a request for funds from Unit One of the Scugog Fire department to imple- ment this year a coded identification system for properties in Ward 1 (old Reach Township). The decision by council, which was unanimous, cited the fact that the 1978 budget has already been set, and there are no other funds: available to cover the esti- mated cost of $6,000 neces- sary to put the system into Food For Thought by The Hillier's Tiny scoops of ice cream, made with a melon baller, are attractive in a par- fait. Be sure to freeze them firm before serv- ing, or they'll melt too quickly. Make crumb crust special by adding finely ground almonds or walnuts, or a teaspoon of brandy or rum. Super with cheese- cake. You can raise yeast 'dough in a turned-off oven. If there is no pilot light, place a votive can- dle in the bottom rear of the oven, or a pan of hot water just below the bowl of dough. Oven-fried chicken with a south-of-the-border fla- vour: coat pieces with taco flavoured mix and a little flour, dip in melted butter, roll in crushed tortilla chips. Serve with grated cheese and pepper sauce. Diet tip: sprinkle a little lemon or orange juice over vegetables - and skip the butter! If you're watching what you eat, what you eat should be wonderful! A formal request for the funds had been made May 8 when a delegation of fire- men met with members of council. At the May 8 meeting, members of council seemed to be receptive to the idea of the coded identification system, although there were reservations expressed at that time over where the money would come from. The Fire department esti- mated that it would cost '$4200 in wages (700 man- hours at $6 per hour) and Too many minor variances more than materials. $1500 in In turning down the re- quest for the money, council did leave open the possibil- ity that the funds could be provided in the 1979 budget. Council upset with developer Members of Scugog Town- ship council expressed anger and dismay over a recent Committee of Ad- justment decision, and pas- sed a resolution to force a contractor to be more pre- cise about the location of a new home on a lot. Council Monday afternoon passed a resolution initiated by councillor Reg Rose which would require Jacob- sen Construction of Whitby to submit a foundation wall survey for every new home the company constructs in future in Scugog Township. What sparked the resolut- ion was a Committee of Adjustment decision recent- ly which granted the con- struction company a minor variance of 9.5 feet for a house under construction in Ward 1, which is too close to a road allowance. Councillor Rose said his motion was prompted by the fact that this was not the first time the company had to apply for minor vari- ances for houses under con- struction. In fact, he said, there have been six or eight similar instances. Councillor Vern Asselstine suggested that the require- ment of a survey may not solve the problem, and he said council might have to consider forcing the con- tractor. to tear down the - foundation walls if they aren't constructed within the limits of the building by-law. Council had knowledge of the 9.5 foot discrepancy on the house under construc- tion in Ward 1, and had asked that the Committee of Adjustment reject the re- quest for a minor variance. However, in a written report to the council, the Committee justified its action by saying that a 9.5 foot set-back is considered "minor"; the house in its present location does not present a visibility prob- lem; and that zoning and other regulations are being adhered to. At one point during the debate on the issue, mem- bers of council discussed an appeal. of the Committee of Adjustment decision to the Ontario Municipal Board. However, it was decided this course of action would tie up further construction of the house for several months, and that the deve- loper would get the message by the resolution demanding the foundation wall survey. A Township by-law states that the council may ask for such a survey for any new house under construction in the Township. Last week young Scott Wilson of Epsom dropped into the Star with some balloons and a letter which his brother Rick found about two miles from Uxbridge. There were four deflated balloons, a long string and a plastic bag which contained a message and a self stamped and addressed envelope. The message read "To anyone: Do not rip up this please! Write where it was found, the date, year, time A.M. or P.M. Then send card to address. P.S. There is a stamp in here for postage." The message was obviously written by the young lad whom the envelope was addressed to, John D. Twisk, 1643 Greenbrier, St.Paul, Minnesota. In the interest of science - we hope that Scott and Rick will send off the information requested by the young American scientist.
