Re To ae SN LAR Ren A Tr ae Ne a Te 8 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, May 31, 1978 Borelians "Dinner a Winner" Last week's three-night run of the Bofelians' second offering this season, Hart and Kaufman's perennial favorite The Man Who Came to Dinner, directed by Ed Daigle of Prince Albert, was an audience winner from start to finish. The play's large and local- ly prominent cast, sparkled by star, Terry Hodgins in an impressive interpretation of nasty Sheridan Whiteside, critic, proved itself meteor- ic under very warm May skies. Although the plot was sometimes hampered by many references to leading lights of its contemporary 30's period, the potpourri of performers who trouped through the unfortunate Stanley (Irma Lewis, Ed Daigle, Heather Hodgins and Rick Cruezburg) house- hold was itself attention- rivetting. - The antics of character actor John Rodway as the "wonderful" Banjo, a thinly veiled parody of Harpo Marx, the eerie quality of the "quite strange' Stanley sister Harriet, sheltered axe murderess Lizzie Bordon, essayed by Diane Lackie, or the fey Noel Coward figure of Beverley Carlton, "the world's greatest living act- or,"" meticously and hil- ariously enacted by Arthur Channer were only three of the production's Highlights. Although the play's focus was on the demanding role of Whiteside himself, a lite- rary tribute to famed critic Alexander Woollcott, it was the many supporting roles, the Kaleidoscope of person- alities and the rapidly paced action which gave the play its vitality. Gther professional calibre™® performers who revolved around the wholly credible Mr. Hodgins were newcom- mer Leslie Summers as the comely Maggie Cutler, a smashing David Lepp (best of the lot) as reporter Bert Jefferson, a suitably sexy Kathy vames in a _glo- rious siren portrayal of the. "boudoir butterfly' Lor- raine Sheldon, Bobbie Drew as the starched," aggrieved Miss Preen, Mark Lockyer as the befuddled Dr. Brad- ley, and the Borelians own talented resident stage designer, Les Parkes, as the eccentric Professor Metz straight from "two years in a cave with plant lice." Serving industriously in the background were crowd-pleasers Jean Ken- nedy as cook Sarah and Pei Hvidsten as butler John, a well matched, competent pair of performers. Cameo roles were spotlit 'by Kent Farndale as Mrs. McCutcheon, surprise lun- cheon guests- the Mayor (Lawrence Malcolm) and the Reverend (Charles Clarke)-herded by warden Baker (Tom Midgely), and double duty performers ra- dio 'Mush' announcer Cam Muir and labour agitator Sandy (Doug Olliffe). This large cast was rounded out by Mrs. Clarke, expressman Ed Canning, Sheriff David James, and an engaging sextet of youthful singers from R.H.Cornish under Charlie White's direction. Non-human highlights which stirred audience com- ment were Whiteside's num- erous peculiar presents such as cockroach city, a mummy case, and a crate of penguins, the latter real- istically constructed by gifted Andrea McGregor. {°F 2 A scene from the Borelians play 'The Man Who Came to Dinner". No play can be performed without the help of such keen helpers and the Bore- lians were gratified by their first-rate backstage crew, especially Irv Gibson on lights, Joan Scott as book- holder, and Alf Kennedy, stage manager. It wasn't easy to depict zero degree December in twenty-nine degree May, but the Borelians came through credibly once again with a well 'staged, acted and knit performance which sent their warm, responsive audiences happily home.
