Ir mB x e Sen e ae SSE 12--- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, June 7, 1978 New Record For The 10th annual Canoe the Nonquon proved to be the biggest ever as 205 canoes entered for the 20 mile race against the clock, Saturday. Weather and water condi- tions were almost perfect for the more than four hundred canoeists of all ages who set out, and this may have con- tributed to a new record being set by Elwood Stewart and Les Korosi of Oshawa. They paddled their way to a time of two hours, 59 min- utes and 53 seconds, knock- ing several seconds off the previous record and mark- ing the first time ever that a canoe completed the course in under three hours. They were followed closely by Ron Ryan and Paul Greenway of Dorset, Ont- if ¥ fi, LA Le aria. The time for the fastest resident paddlers went to Rudi Jammer and Steve Rensink of Port Perry at three hours, 15 minutes and 44 seconds. George Ausman and Howard Moore of Port Perry placed second in the resident competition with a time of three hours, 23 min- utes, one second, while Ralph French and Wayne Bradt of Caesarea were 14 minutes behind them. In the women's open class Barb Carnegie of Port Peryy and Jayne Davidson of Can- nington got through the 20 miles in the fastest time of 4 hours, 46 minutes, 1 second. The youngest competitor in the raceswas 10-year old Scott Brandon. Sortie es Lo Whew. That was fun but I'm glad it's over for another year.
