The new pay scale of the contract brings the base rate for labourers to $4.55 an hour; $5.80 per hour for truck drivers; and $6.10 an hour for grader operators. Other terms include a $30 allowance for safety boots, and an increase from four to five weeks vacation after 20 years service. The work week will re- main at 44 hours, and the pay rate for overtime on Sundays will stay at tine and a half. The union had been seeking double time for Sundays. The negotiations between the union and the commit- tee of council had been go- ing on since the first week in April. The contract has been formally accepted by the full council. He obtained a 'Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, ma- joring in Agricultural Econo- mics and Rural Develop- ment. Brian is presently employed with The United Co-operatives of Ontario in theBelleville area. In last week's issue of the Star we carried a list of graduates from Durham College, and inadvertently left out the names of four grads from Port Perry. Dave is working for the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food. ~ Dave also won the Student Federation Gold Medal for leadership in student activi- ties. Scugog councillor Reg Rose, who is chairman of Durham Social Services Committee officiated at an opening ceremony last Thursday for a new activi- ties room at Lakeview Ma- nor senior citizens home in Beaverton. There were many officials on hand including Durham Chairman Walter Beath and Brock Township Mayor Keith Rynard. The $277,000 project funded by the Re- gion and the province of Ontario will allow for social and crafts activities by the residents of Lakeview and other seniors living in the community. Port Perry High School principal Doug Williams be- came a grandfather last week - three times over. Mr. Williams' daughter, Wendy Armstrong, gave birth May 31 to THREE boys at Oshawa General Hospital, and everybody is doing very nicely. Congratulations. The Anglican Church Junior Women held a card and dessert party last Wed- nesday night May 31, .. Door prizes and high scores were drawn before a delicious awray of cheese cakes and coffee was served. ls Jane Anne Makarchuk of Port Perry was one of nearly five hundred students awar- "ded undergraduate degrees May 26 at Trent University's 18th Convocation. She was granted her Bachelor of Science degree. John Robert David Hope received his bachelor of Laws degree on May 27, 1978 at the Spring Convocation of the University of Windsor. Mr. Hope will spend the next year in Sault Ste. Marie and will attend the Bar Admis- sions Course in Toronto in the fall of 1979. The event was attended by Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Jackson was recently honoured by the Medical Society of Mew Jersey when he was awarded the Golden Merit Award. The award, which was established in 1957, is presented annually as an expression of pride to doctors who have given fifty years of distinguished service as a practicing physi- cian.
