Cornish School ended a suc- cessful year of track and field Friday afternoon with a meet made up of 12 teams from the school. The team approach allow- ed a maximum number of students to participate and prizes were awarded to out- standing individuals and teams. Awards and crests were donated by the Royal Bank '82,750 grant A provincial grant of $82,750 will assist the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority with the further development of ten of. its conservation areas in the Regional Municipality of Durham. Natural Resources Mini- ster Frank S. Miller said June 19 that the grant will enable the Authority to con- tinue extensive development Continued on page 20 and all students who took part received a Junior Olym- pic Crest as a memento of the day. On May 31 students from R.H. Cornish took part in a- 16-school track and field meet and the top two in each event completed June 8 against the best elementary school athletes in Durham Region. . Kira Cope achieved a re- cord for Durham Region in the long jump for 14-year olds with a mark of 2.31 meters, and also placed first in the 200 meter race. Heather Jeffrey took first place in the mile run, while Mark Phillips won a first in the 200 meters and a second in the 100 meters for 12-year old boys. This year's parade will be led by popularCHOO Radio personality Bill Johnson who will be Parade Marshall and also "toss out" the first ball to open the night's activities. Also in the Parade will be the Rebels Drum and Bugle Band from Oshawa who are going to perform several numbers at the Park during the opening ceremonies. In the parade this year we will also have the President of the Ontario Amateur Softball Association who has consen- ted to umpire the feature game of the night between CHOO Radio's Softball team and the Coaches No-Stars who will be made up of all the House-league coaches. The President of the OASA Mr. George Mahler has con- sented to attend our '"Boos- ter Night" and help cele- brate Minor Softball Week June 19 to 24. The new plant is the latest phase in the integration of the Oshawa-Whitby-New- castle water supply system, and uses the most modern techhnological advances for the treatment and supply of safe water.
