About 100 people most of whom are involved in the provision of health care ser- vices turned up for the meet- ing and heard Health council chairman Henry Polak re- affirm that the DHC is an advisory body only, set up to co-ordinate, review and make recommendations to the provincial government on all aspects of health care in Durham Region. In his address Mr. Polak stressed that the 17-member council is sensitive to local needs and would "expect the Ministry (of Health) to re- cognize our input and make some decisions according to our wishes." However, earlier in the Youth charged A 16-year old East Whitby man has been charged with careless driving following a two-vehicle accident June 23 on Highway 7A near Arrow Street in Port Perry. Police estimated damage to a car driven by Dean McHugh at $300 and damage to a car driven by Marlene Moore of Port Perry at $200. The accident occurred about 8:45 p.m. and Ms. Moore suffered minor in- juries. | (HASLER arvwnr | week there were strong statements from the Board Chairman of the Dr. J.O. Ruddy Hospital in Whitby to the effect that the new. health. council is not representative and is replacing the function of local hospital boards. During his 30 'minute address Mr. Polak outlined the Health council's goals and functions and gave a review of the first year's operations. He said that one of the priorities established by the council in the past year was for an up-grading of the new-born nursery at Oshawa General to allow for more - local care of high-risk" infants, rather than having them transferred to Sick Children's in Toronto. A second item under con- sideration by the council last year was a recommendation for a new $200,000 pathologi- cal waste disposal system to be located at an unspecified site in Oshawa. Mr. Polack also told the meeting the council recom- mended that plans for a capital expansion at Ux- bridge Hospital be "modi- fied". A provincial govern- ment freeze will put off the scaled down expansion until at least 1980. For the future Mr. Polak suggested that a priority project for the Health coun- cil could be the provision of more nursing home beds in the Region and a mental health clinic. . He warned that the Dis- trict Health council may DRIVE OUT AND SAVE MORE recommend that some exist- ing programs be cut in favour of those with a "high- er priority". He did not specify which programs might have to be reassessed for this purpose. The Health Council, made up of 17 members from across Durham Region including Port Perry busi- nessman Howard Hall has started meeting with the Boards at the Community in the Region, and a meeting with the Board at the Com- munity Hospital in Port Perry will probably take place later this year. HEALTH MINISTER Ontario Health minister Denis Timbrell had been scheduled to address the meeting, but cancelled out at the last minute because of "urgent cabinet business'. He sent his parliamentary assistant John Turner, and the Peterborough MLA told the meeting that the task of longe range planning in the health field is "crucial", and the health minister is pre- pared "to listen very careful- ly to the Health council advice." Mr. Turner said the pro- vincial government set up the Health councils across the province to get more "direct input from people at the local level." He mentioned chronic care treatment facilities and mental health as two areas that the Ministry of Health is looking closely at across the province. 1977 ASPEN p.s.
