8 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, July 5, 1978 No review of Durham Continued from page 1 within Durham, because they could get some input from members of their local councils. Scugog councillor Reg Rose eventually voted against the motion, calling the wording "'redundant and ambiguous." While he did say that some of the basic ideas behind the motion might be worthwhile, he said that the wording would lead any committee in circles. Councillor Rose offered his own amendment which ask- ed the committee of mayors simply to undertake a study, and not bother determining first if there is indeed a need for such a review and study. His amendment got no sup- port from other members of council, and councillor Rose eventually voted against the original motion. Oshawa Mayor Jim Potti- cary was most vocal in his opposition to the motion say- ing that if there is to be any review of Durham Region it must be done by "indepen- dent" sources from outside the Durham framework. Another Oshawa council- lor, Allan Dewar, said a study would amount to a waste of time and money, and he cited a lack of action on the recommendations made in other reviews of regional municipalities in Ottawa-Carleton and Hamil- ton-Wentworth as examples. He also suggest that the motion's sponsors, council lors John DeHart and Bob Dykstra, might have other motives, in that the only time there is a call for such reviews is when elections are getting close. Newcastle Mayor Garnet Rickard suggested that the problems with Durham Region stem from mis- understanding and a lack of information that lead to con- fusion among the public. He said that it is not the legis- lation that needs to be re- viewed, but rather some of the "players," meaning the politicians. The big holiday week-end brought the Island Church attendance down to a figure . comparable with last Jan- uary. Those who were ab- sent missed a special treat when Mr. Irvin Gibson of Port Perry was present to sing two lovely numbers. We hope to have a musical special every Sunday through July and August. If you do not see it announced in the paper, come anyway and expect a surprise. Though few children were present Rev. Linstead had his usual good story. The present one was fresh in his mind after seeing the burial place of David Livingstone in Westminster Abbey. Living- stone's heart was buried in Africa by the servants and natives, when they realized this was where his heart should remain, as his work - centred in Africa. Living- stone died as he lived, always turning to God for assistance. The sermon was on "Fear". Though some may argue that it is a handicap, it was given by God for a purpose. It gives a preserva- tion of life and safety. Fear of God refers to awe or ~ reverence for God. Reta Wilson was able to leave hospital for Saturday and Sunday when she spent the week-end at the home of her daughter, Ruth. Reta is very appreciative for all the cards-and flowers she has received. We trust she will soon be feeling better. -y ¥ from $11,367.
