But it was just recently, July 12, to be exact, that they met for the first time. w. The two ladies were young school-girls; barely into their teens, when they started to correspond as pen pals in 1937. Mrs. Vansichler lived in Oshawa at the time, and Mme. Charton in a small village in central France. They kept up the cor- respondence over the past ~ for the first ti four decades, writing half a dozen letters each year, keeping track of each other's lives. . And while she has a pretty good knowledge of English grammar and voca- bulary, she had never had. the opportunity to speak English or hear it spoken in the small rural village of St. Leger where she makes her home. hy Any apprehensions she may have had about getting on a plane, travelling several thousand miles to a strange land and visiting a woman she had never met, soon vanished, as Mme. Charton told the Star in a brief interview last week that she she says she cannot quite understand that Lake Scugog is completely frozen over with ice and snow for: several months of the year, and people get around on snowmobiles. Their correspondence was interrupted during the war years -and occupation of France, and Mrs. Vansichler . says she stopped writing when one of her letters came back unopened.
