Pontypool Generals win tournament by Danny Millar On the strength of a magnificent pitching per- formance by Kelly Neals, the Pontypool Generals defeated Guelph Purina 2 to 0 to-win the Fifth Annual Canadian Tire Tournament, Neals, who had been superb throughout the tour- nament, struck out sixteen Guelph hitter, including the final three to nail down the championship and $275. It was Neals who hit the home run in extra innings to win the semi-final aganst Greenwood. The game against Greenwood, he later admitted, was his toughest. He also drove in the winning run in the final with a two-out single in the first. Kelly showed a lot of class in a post-game interview when he declined to rate himself as a pitcher -and hitter in comparison to the tournament's best. He felt this tournament victory would help his team in its league play. Local teams fared well as Yelverton advanced to the semi-final where they were beaten by Guelph 6 to 0. In this game Yelverton was unable to use their star pitcher Frank O'Brien when it was discovered he was ineligible on a technicality. Yelverton did collect $75 however, and finished with a win-loss record of 4 to 1. Sunderland won $25 as division winners but were eliminated in the quarter finals. Scugog Island was a disappointment as they failed to make the playoffs. In Port Perry's first game, a two run single by Ken Davis in the fourth was the key blow as the Canadian Tire team defeated Lindsay 6 to 0. Larry Elson pitched excellently to get the shutout victory. Danny Ellicott was the losing pitcher. A superlative second game .by Elson allowed Port to defeat Guelph 5 to 0. The powerful righthander struck out nineteen and allowed just one hit, a double, to obtain his second victory. Doug Bryant was tagged with the loss for Purina. Midgets tie Oshawa 10-10 by Deb Ireland On Thursday evening two good ball clubs met for an exciting exhibition game. The Oshawa 'B' Midgets visited Port Perry. Both teams got off to slow starts. The score was 5 to 5 at the bottom of five innings. The strong opposition gave Port no chance for 'big hits". The only way Port could get on base was by singles, Doug Scott, coach of the Port team decided to start right handed Roland Skinner in the third game in an effort to rest Elson for the elimina- tions. Skinner just didn't have the control or velocity needed as he surrendered four runs in less than three innings. He left with none walks, or errors. George Burnett had an excellent game in the field. The Lumbermen had a big seventh inning with 4 runs. Oshawa's inning was the eighth with 5 runs. Port's pitchers were George Bur- nett, Mark Cleveland, Dennis Franssen, and Ian Hartung. The final score was a 10 to 10 tie.
