Under the program, communities with popula- tions under 30,000 will be eligible for low-interest loans of up to $150,000. The money is'to be used for improving municipally owned lands and buildings. In the case of Port Perry this could mean that streets, sidewalks and parking areas owned by the municipality would be eligible under the - plan. Local need and the degree of municipal council com- mittment will be determin- ing factors in which com- munities receive the loans. The deadline for applications for 1978-79 funding is Janu- ary 31, 1979. ... Palmer Park ...Queen St. & Plaza's ... Post Office ... Post Office ... Palmer Park ... Palmer Park ... Fair Grounds Tourists on increase Continued registered at the hotel has increased 41 per cent over last year. Mr. Larsen attributes this increase to two things: the nsion of the room tax, the premium on US funds that Americans enjoy when they exchange their money. THEIR INTERESTS What brings visitors to the Scugog area? One is the location on a good highway which many people travel- ling east and west prefer over the rigours of driving Highway 401. Heather Darnley, informa- tion officer at the Chamber of Commerce tourist booth on Highway 7A says that visitors to the area are in- terested in the museum and historical sites, antiques, golfing and tennis. But the biggest attraction is Lake Scugog itself, the fishing, boating, and swim- ming. Ms. Darnley told the Star that some of the visitors to the area have expressed surprise that there are no hotels or motels located right on the lakeshore. And there also seems to be a lot of interest in housekeeping cottages. This is the first year the information booth has been in operation in Scugog, and during the first month there were 130 inquiries made, 40 of these by visitors from the United States. The cost of the booth is being shared by the Scugog Chamber of Commerce and the Central Ontario Tourist Association, and information is available on a wide range . of attractions in this area and in the Great Pine Ridge Tourist District which rough- ly covers the north shore of Lake Ontario from Kingston west. If the booth is kept open next summer, the Chamber of Commerce will try to get a location near the intersec- tion of Highway 12 and 7A, and that should attract considerably more visitors than the present location has so far this summer. Mr. Larsen, chairman of the Scugog Chamber of Commerce tourist commit- tee, and a director of both the Central Ontario Tourist Association and the Great Pine Ridge Tourist Council, is a strong believer in boost- ing the tourist industry by providing visitors with a friendly, 'personal touch." He believes in the Ontario government slogan 'We Treat You Royally," and has handed out the blue and gold buttons to employees of businesses in the area who are meeting visitors on a day-to-day basis. * When asked whether American tourists may be staying away from Canada because of higher prices, Mr. Larsen says that he has heard of no specific com- plaints, other than the cost D. Lois Milne B.A. 0.. OPTOMETRIST Medical Associates Buildin 462 Paxton St., Port Perry for gasoline along Highway 401, which he called a '"'rip- off." He added that to his know- ledge there have been a couple of isolated incidents where local businesses have refused to give the exchange on American money, some- thing which upsets Mr. Larsen. "Why would they do that? Those people are just not going to go back there, again," he said. Since his livelihood de- pends to a great extent on tourists, Mr. Larsen does a lot of personal promoting on his own such as mailing out brochures, and he is proud of the fact that his efforts are starting to result in repeat business, something he says is crucial to the success of any tourist-related opera: tion. And he is enthusiastic about the tourist potential in the area. He does feel, however, that-this potential has not yet been developed to the maximum, and he suggested such things as more sports facilities, N good, public beach on the lake, and even more land- scaping and flowers in Palmer Park, work that could be done by volunteers so that it would not cost the Township any money. « Mr. Larsen says he will be presenting a detailed list of suggestions and recomm¥hg dations to the full Chamber of Commerce at a general meeting some time this fall. In the meantime, he's going to have lots to keep him busy as he says that reservations for August at his hotel are up over the same month last year. % Dr. James Gerrow wishes to announce the opening of his DENTAL PRACTICE in association with ' Dr. Peter Zakarow L At 172 King Street East, Oshawa ~ FRIDAY, AUGUST 11th 9p.m.tolam.
