Wednesday, August 16, 1978 But changes necessary West Weekend organizers Organizers of Port Perry's annual Western Weekend were generally pleased with the way the three-day event ~ went off this year' despite smaller crowds for the activ- ities on Queen Street. While it' is too early to assess the financial success of the weekend, Richard Drew of the Chamber of Commerce organization committee said Monday morning that 'things look pretty good'. He added that after the expenses are paid, the Chamber's profit should be greater than last year's figure of just under $2,000. Mr. Drew said that this year the committee made a serious effort to keep expen- ses down, and one event that was not on the card for this reason was the power boat racing on Lake Scugog. The boat races last year proved to be a popular event but they didn't pay for them- selves because many spec- -tators chose to watch from the midway area in the park without paying the admis- sion fee. Unlike last year, the weatherman co-operated completely and this helped the attendance figures at such special events as the Tractor Pull and the softball game at the Joe Fowler Park. Also, the dances at the arena went smoothly with no serious incidents and good crowds. And the Gong Show also proved to be a popular affair as it was last year. The midway in Palmer Park was missing a few rides this year, and organ- izers say it was because the midway operators got mixed up on their dates and some of the rides were booked into another community for the same weekend. Commenting the smaller crowds on Queen Street, committee member Howard Hall told the Star that there just didn't seem to be any- thing to attract the large crowds. He said that part of the reason could have been that some merchants and local organizations decided not to participate and this feel generally satisfied hurt. 'There just didn't seem to be the right kind of atmosphere on the main street," he added. Mr. Hall went on to say that the Western Weekend committee will be conduct- ing a poll of merchants and organizations in the next few months to determine if they want to participate in Western Weekend next year. A report will be submitted to the Chamber of Commerce at the next regular meeting. Long range plan approved for Greenbank park development Scugog Township council has given its endorsement to an ambitious project which will develop a multi-use park and recreation area in Green bank. Jim Green and Judy Latta of the Greenbank Hall Com- mittee presented the plans for the park development to council Monday night, and asked for approval in general and a commitment for financial help from the municipality over the next five years or so. Council agreed to the request to approve the This look at Queen Street on Saturday afternoon was taken from the roof of one of the downtown buildings. Port Perry's merchants held their sidewalk sale, while other booths and games were scattered along concept of the project but added that any financial help from the municipality would have to be made on a yearly - basis. The park plan proposal presented by the committee members Monday night calls for the development of a large playing field, a new baseball diamond, a natural amphitheatre, tennis courts that can be used as an outdoor rink in winter, wash- room facilities, parking area foot paths, and the planting of numerous shrubs and trees, all in the general area of present park land to the east of the church and com- munity hall in Greenbank. Mr. Green, who is commit- tee chairman told council that no exact estimates of the cost of the development have been established at this time, and he did say that the committee recognizes that the project would have to be completed over several years. But he added that the committee feels that Green- bank has not received as much Township money for Continued on page 3 the street.
