"Never place new grain on top of ald grain. Remove accumulations of old 'grain from corners, crevices, par- titions and double walls. These sweepings should be burned or buried so insects will not return to infest new- ly binned grain," advises r. Bereza. Grain bins should be sep- arated from feed rooms, as grinding equipment is diffi- cult to keep clean. Insects will readily migrate to newly stored grain if these two areas are not separated. "Body heat from animals and insul- ation from hay allow insects to be active throughout the winter in improperly cooled grain." Maintaining storage areas in grain-tight condition . destroys their habitat. When bins are in good repair, rodents, birds and moisture are also kept out. After granaries are pre- pared for this season's new grain, an added precaution is recommended. 'Spray the floor, walls and ceiling with an insecticide to kill remaining pests or those migrating to the empty bin," says Mr. Bereza. "For maximum effect, apply at least two weeks before stor- age." Insects can infest stored grain so quickly that checks are advised every two weeks, especially during warm weather. Insect activ- ity generates excess heat and moisture that are ab- sorbed by surrounding grain. When the warm, moist air rises to the cool surface, condensation encourages molds and fungi to grow. The surface grain then cakes, spoils, and smells musty. . "Damp or crusted areas on the surface of the grain indicates heating," says Mr. Bereza. "Thrust a hand into the grain and check for abnormal odor.
