Alan Jones, who now lives in London, England qualified for the pole position in a Chaparral Lola, and was never in trouble as he picked up his 4th win in seven starts, and now seems a sure bet to * capture the overall victory in the ten-race Can-Am series. Fellow Australian War- wick Brown, also in a Chap- arral Lola had the number two position on the starting grid, but he could not over- take the hard-driving Jones in either of the two heats. Canadian hopeful Horst Kroll of Toronto placed well back after his Hayman Kroll Lola was forced from the first heat with oil pressure problems. Sunday was a beautiful day for racing at Mosport with clear skies and moder- ate temperatures, a welcome change from Sat. when heavy rains fell late in the afternoon. Attendance was down from the usual racing week- ends, and this may have been partly due to tough new regulations imposed by Mosport in an effort to curtail the rowdyism which has plagued the park during weekend races in the past, Although the crowds were smaller, there were no serious incidents reported and the faps that were there seemed intent on enjoyi the competitions rather tha, © causing trouble. There was one incident late in the final heat of the Can-Am when a pit worker grabbed a hot wire and the electric shock threw him to the concrete. He was treated by medical personnel at the track and was reported have suffered no seriousy injuries. } _The two heats of 30 laps (75 mile total) was a new wrinkle thrown into the Can- Am series and in the second heat a pit stop was manda- tory. : For his victory Jones received a diamond studded stirling silver belt buckle and the winner's share of the $75,000 purse. 5 Photos by John B.
