+» Highest Rating Awarded Durham Region receives credit rating Triple A Durham Region moved ¢ into a select group of Ontario Ld municipalities with the awarding last week of a Triple A (AAA) credit rating by Moody's Investors Ser- vices of New York. A second investment rating house, Poor's Cor- poration, also of New York has given Durham a Double MA rating. The Triple AAA rating is the highest awarded by any of the recognized agencies, and only four other munici- palities - Metro Toronto, Ottawa - Carleton, Peel and London, have received this rating. vw With debenture issues ototalling $5 million coming up in January, and in the fall of 1979, the credit rating will improve the Region's ability to horrow money on both the domestic and foreign bond markets. And if Durham maintains the strong credit rating, a savings in interest payments over the next ten: years could reach more than $500,000. Councillor John Aker, who chairs the Region's finance committee, said last week that the main reasons for the strong credit rating stem from the budget restraints which have kept increases to approximately four percent for the last two years; the decision to reduce capital spending while increasing the levies for sewer develop ment charges; and the re- negotiating of the OHAP agreement. The current per capita debt for Durham is about $50, a figure considered reasonable for municipali- ties which are experiencing rapid growth. Representatives from both the investment rating houses made extensive reviews of the Region's financial pic- ture, and visited Durham on 'several occasions. Commenting on the credit rating, regional chairman Walter Beath stated last week that they are a tribute to the overall financial and economic strength of Dur- ham, and should enhance the present efforts to attract further industrial develop- ment to the municipality.
