Cor- nish Public School in Port Perry made a strong show- ing at the Durham Central cross country running meet held last week in Uxbridge Township. Girls teams from Cornish placed first in four age divisions - 10, 11, 12, and 14 years old, while the boys teams placed first in the division for 9 and 11-year olds. Teams from the Joseph Gould school in Uxbridge placed first in five divisions, while teams from Thorah Public School placed first in two classes, and Scott Town- ship placed first in one age group. In all there were close to 400 young athletes from 16 elementary schools in the Central Durham Division taking part in the cross country competitions held October 4 at the Durham Forest Conservation Area southwest of Regional Road 23. The girlsteams raced over a 1.25 mile course, as did the boys aged 9 to 11, while the older boys competed over a 1.5 mile course. The top teams in each division were determined by the best three finishers from each school. The top three school teams in each division will now go on to compete against run- ners from elementary schools from all of Durham Region at the finals October 16 at the Heber Downs Con- Continued MoJack's Rob Greiner scored the prettiest goal of the night as he was sent into the clear on a pass from Nicholson. Greiner hit the right corner while cutting in front of the net, and narrow- ed the Lindsay lead to 7 to 5 at a point whore Port Perry seemed to be building - momentum. But two penalties late in the second to Nicholson for high-sticking and Charlie Durward for interference resulted in a goal by Meehan with just 19 seconds left in the middle period, and that snuffed out the brief Port Perry rally. The teams traded penal- ties throughout the third period until Lindsay's John Lucas added the final goal with 55 secc 1ds left and Port Perry struggling with two men in the penalty box. Penalties hurt the Mo- Jacks throughout the contest with the team picking 17 minors to Lindsay's nine. Most of the penalties were of the 'cheap' variety - for hooking, hulding and inter- ference - and reflected the frustration the players were experiencing on the ice. Coach Dave Nicholishen went with three lines, and the most effective was the trio- of Gord Hinze, Rob Greiner, and Brad Nichol-, |. son. While all three lines had trouble finishing off plays in the Lindsay end and getting clear shots ¢n goal, the Port Perry forwvards showed speed and the ability to break quickiy and move the puck well between the blue had its own problems, espe- cially in clearing the puck from its own end. Rob Evans and captain Steve Jones both had a lot of ice time along the blue line. There was a good crowd on hand for the home opener and team sponsor Ken Jack- son dropped the ceremonial first puck prior to the open- ing whistle. The game was delayed several minutes midway through the first period when the lights over the ice went out, and then later in the game the fire alarm system was triggeregy for some unknown reason. It was just that kind of evening. Port Perry plays its next home game this coming Sunday when Uxbridge will be the visiting team.
