Pictured below are guest # § { » es a ] Bills' guest speaker says Legion must attract young Unless the Royal Canadian Legion actively seeks to attract more young men and women into its ranks, the future of the organization is in doubt and it could die out completely. That was the message delivered Saturday night by a 30-year member of the Legion who was guest speak- er for the annual Young Bills Night at Port Perry Branch 419. Noting at the opening of his speech that there were less than 50 veterans in atten- dance at the dinner and fellowship night, Hank Leonard Rittersporn said "our future lies with our sons and daughters, and there is "nothing to fear from the young people joining the Legion organization." Mr. Rittersporn, a World War 2 veteran, a lawyer, and a 30-year member of the Silverthorn Legion in Toron- to has held a variety of executive positions within the Legion organization at the local, zone and district levels, and he is presently Honorary Counsel of the Ontario Command. "The harvest is plentiful, but the harvesters are few," he said. "We are dying out. "If an ex-serviceman is not a member of the Legion by now, he'll never be a mem- ber.- That's a fact of life. So we must start to look else- where." At one point Mr. Ritter- sporn cited figures from his own branch in Toronto saying there were at one time 1200 full members. But that figure, he said, has declined now to about 360 members. ] Attracting young people into the Legion could serve two purposes, Mr. Ritter- sporn suggested. It would first help to guarantee that the Legion organization will continue in existance, and secondly it could be a factor in instilling certain positive values in young people. He mentioned such youth- related problems as drugs and crime, and said that Legion values like sacrifice, 1' remembrance and service could be beneficial to young people. '"They must be told what the Legion is and what it stands for", he said. Mr. Rittersporn touched on the inherent values of traditional institutions such as the Monarchy and the British Commonwealth of Nations, saying they mean something and must be supported, especially during times of crisis. mma RnnRnunnnnnnes 2 LT CL ELECT NEIL HUNTER AREA COUNCILLOR AT LARGE SCUGOG TOWNSHIP On Monday, November 13 For information or transportation CALL 985-7456 The Young Bills Night featured a dinner and fellow- ship evening for veterans of?
