by Mr. Harvey Malcolm On Friday evening the Zone 4 Ontario Sheep Asso- ciation held their annual meeting in the Banquet room - of the: Manvers Township 'Community Arena with over 100 members present. The business meeting was preceeded by a delicicus lamb banquet efficiently served by the Ladies of the Arena Auxiliary donated by one of the members and cooked by Mrs. Susan Ball a cal member. The 1978 President Mr. Bill Gardhouse chaired the meeting. The guest speaker was Mr. Bernard Benoit, Quebec director and Rast Chairman of the Canada Lg Sheep Council (hubby of the well known Madam Benoit ®irequently seen on T.V. commercials). Mr. Benoit spoke of the sheep industry in Quebec - how their num- bers had decreased from 800,000 to a mere 35,000 and of the assistance given by the Quebec government to en- courage the increasing of the sheep population to make it a more stable industry. Pro- ducers are paid $50.00 per yearling ewe kept for breed- ing purposes at the rate of $10.00 per year for five years. Also for any produc- ers who strive to attain 400 breeding ewes the govern- ment subsidies the producer $1 for every dollar spent to reach this goal. By this means they hope to increase the sheep population in Quebec to 85,000 head. Please note Hon. Wm. Newman how 'much better Quebec treats its sheep farmer than does Ontario! Mr. Benoit stated that lamb should be hung limp to bring out its best flavour. He commented on the fact that New Zealand frozen lamb is usually inferior to Canadian lamb because they do not have the time to give it suitable aging before freez- ing because of their rush to process 45 million lambs in a short season. In this Election of Officers the following slate was elec- ted - Past President - Bill Gardner; President - Donald Grant; 1st Vice President - Bob Pegg; 2nd Vice Presi- dent - Keith Sinclair; Sect - Treas - Russel Dow; Bow- manville Membership Sect. - Dianne Ward. The only local sheep producers active on the board was Mrs. Susan Ball elected as an alternate . Representative to the Ont- ario Board of Directors. The membership rate currently $2.00 is to increase as set by Board of Directors. Ministry of Health and Industrial Safety Branch to mention any names but in our opinion Allan Beer, Terry Staples, Robert Hulll, Mr. and Mrs. Wes McMahon and Mr. and Mrs. Proctor deserve special mention and our apologies to those we missed. In our humble opinion it was a well run show of a calibre as good if not better than that put on by far larger centres. Much of the credit is due Ms. Phillips for her efficient organization and selection of individuals for positions of responsibility. Sunday service at the White Church was well atten- ded on Sunday due in part to the fact that there were two baptisms performed. Rev. Gerald Hofstetter assisted our minister Rev. Stanley Hanes in this ceremony. Miss Lana Malcolm contri- buted a duet along with her guitar plucking (She and her guitar) Those offered for baptism were Christa Marie Robinson, infant daughter fo Clare and Laurie Robinson (Rev. Geralds niece, inci- dentally) and Craig Vaughn McGill, infant son of Vaughn and Audrey McGill (both cute little rascals).
