WV VV. Te we \ = ALL J LE can LN a oY opt 1 PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., November 8, 1978 -- 11 Donald Crosler Thave represented Ward 1 on the Scugog Council for the past 2 years, which has been a most worthwhile exper- ience for me. i I live in Ward 1 with my | wife, Norene, and four child- ren, Bryan, Debbie, Kevin and Greg. We have a dairy farm on the 3rd Concession of Reach, east of Highway 3 12. IT have spent all my lifein + #airy farming and have served on many related committees in county, am Past Noble Grand of Warri- ner Lodge, Independent Order of Oddfellows, also served one term on Reach Township School Board just prior to amalgamation. * Since being elected on Council two years ago, I have had the opportunity of serving on the Recreation Committee, # Scugog Community Arena Board, Scugog Parks Committee I 4 4 v * 5 and the Community Centres and Parks Board. During my term, I worked towards and achieved a reduction in the Square Footage per home By-law to 1,450 sq. feet, as I felt that many retired couples do not have the need for such a large home and also young couples find the cost too great. : I also presented and achieved a by-law change allowing a farmer to separate a lot at retirement provided he had lived on that farm for ten years or more. Scugog Council in the past 2 years has not been a one man show. We have had the full council support, not without some disagreements, but in the end we have always come out friends. } These are some of the issues as I see them: Industry - We have quite a lot of industry started in the township with an Industrial Committee working to help encourage industry into the area. It takes a lot of time to get industrial people interested and then there is zoning and site plans to get through the Planning department and the other government agencies. Housing - I am in favour of slow growth in all areas of the township. I would like to see the growth kept close to existing towns and villages where there are services now and where it does not conflict with agriculture. Mobile Homes - I would like to see a by-law to permit mobile homes on farms under certain conditions on a yearly basis. I am not, however, in favour of mobile homes just anywhere all over the township, but I feel the cost of building a house is too great when a farmer is trying to expand his operation to help young people come into the business. At this time, there doesn't seem to be any other heavy issues. : 3 I have the interest of the township at heart, and if re-elected will continue to work for you, the ratepayers of Ward 1 as well as for the betterment of Scugog Township as a whole. N Phil Goreski Phil was born in Saskat- chewan in 1918 on his par- ent's homestead. He helped on the farm until the family moved to Ontario in 1937. His parents bought a farm 1%2 miles north of Man- chester where he helped out until 1940. He got married and bought his own farm in Reach Township. Over the next 27 years he operated a dairy farm and raised 10 ghildren. In the 1960's, Phil also started a sub-contrac- ting business in Oshawa which served the surroun- ding areas as well. Provid- ing quality service, it be- came a very successful #4 . business serving a majority of the builders in the district. This business is still being operated today by one of his son's, Ken. : He also successfully has built and operated a tavern known as Port Tavern and a dance hall known as Club Annrene. In 1963 he purchased propérty which has been developed into the largest privately owned marina and camping complex in Southern Ontario. Presently he still owns a small farm in Reach Township, therefore, he understands the problems of today's farmers. -Being a successful businessman in a variety of businesses has brought him into direct contact with all levels of municipal, regional, provincial and Federal government' agencies, therefore he understands the businessman's problems. -He has got a subdivision approved on Scugog Island through the Ontario Municipal Board. He understands your problems because he has had them, he know your concerns because he has experienced them, he knows how to approach the agencies as he has approached them. He knows what it feels like to need help with today's business problems. Your support is respectfully solicited for a dedicated working man. For Ward one, vote for Phil Goreski. HIRE Te Candidates for Ward 1 (old Reach Twp.) - ity Centre as Chairman, the . in the Prince Albert Church Frank Harris ~ I'have been a resident in Prince Albert for 12 years, and have been involved in the Prince Albert Commun- Executive of the Royal Canadian Legion for over 5 years, a Founding Member of thé Social Planning Coun- cil in Port Perry, an Elder for 3 years. At present, I am on the Executive of the 1st Scugog (Manchester) Cubs & Scouts and Vice-President of the Manchester Hall Board. If elected, I would like to see a complete Hydro Elec- tric System for the whole Township. At the present time all residents outside of Port Perry pay 40 per cent more for their Hydro. I feel this is unacceptable. I would like to hold up sub-division building until we can get some light industry into the Township to provide a tax base. Taxation is becoming so oppressive that people on low or fixed incomes are having a rough. time meeting their obligations. : Finally, Council should have more control over the Committee of Adjustment. At the present time, Council is not involved in anything that the Committee does. Council members sit on most Boards but no representation on the Committee of Adjustment. This- causes a good deal of _confusion. ' If elected, I will do my best to obtain lower hydro rates and lower taxation in the form of bringing light industry into the area. During my campaign calls, I have made note of problems and concerns of people in Ward I and I will erideavour to resolve these if elected. John Kuipers As a newcomer on the political scene, I would like to give 'You the following information about myself. I was born in 1925 in Holland 'and came to Canada to the Picton area in 1948. I mar- ried in 1950, at the tender age of 25, to my present wife Nelly and have a family of 8 children, 5 girls and 3 boys, all but one still living in this township. ) I worked as a farm labour- er, construction worker, farm manager, farm equip- ment dealer, sales manager for farm equipment com- pany travelling in Canada and United States in 1960. At this time we moved to the Oshawa Area. In 1965, I started in the Real Estate and at the present time still hold that licence. In 1966, I bought a broiler farm north of Port Perry at Honey's Corners and sold this farm in 1975, moving to Clark St. in Port Perry. We moved back in October, 1978, to the farm at Honey's Corners, of which I reserved 50 acres at time of sale. For many years, I have been involved in Church and School. I helped to organize the Christian Reformed Church in Port Perry, of which I am a member. Presently, I am involved in farming, Real Estate, some construction and developing. I feel that serving as a Councillor in the Scugog Township, I can be a benefit to this area. All I can promise is that I will do my utmost to serve the Township of Scugog to the best of my knowledge. My most and foremost ambition, is to cut out as much red tape as possible, since red tape costs time and money and frustrations. Included in this ambition is a more personal contact with the people of the Township. I will have an open ear to any problem from anyone. Ward 2 Candidates (Port Perry) The issues tacing the next council even if they are not controversial will be impor- tant to our township. Indus- try must be an area worked on. The Industrial Commit- tee, of which I'am chairman, has made some important gains and we must carry on with our work. The Indus- trial brochure which we are working on now will be a great asset when talking to prospective clients but this is a slow and difficult area to make headway (some large industrial clients we have been negotiating with for 18 months). The Residential growth will have to be con- doing, this issue must go along with industrial assessment to ease the residential to commercial tax base. The rezoning of Scugog to conform to the Durham Official Plan will take a great amount of time and knowledge of the elected officials. Recreational needs will have to be kept on top of. Our facilities are very good right now, but there is always need for improvement, so the Recreational budget will have to be spent wisely. The addition to the Library could be a major issue depending on the costs, and how the financial breakdown regarding grants, etc., is. But I do feel it is needed. Even though we do not have control of all our taxes, our share will have to be budgeted for very carefully. With each budget ranging from, needed sidewalks and road repairs to promotional brochures closely watched. This is just a little of what will face your next council. I have enjoyed the past 2 years as councillor and if elected I will carry on with these and other important issues. I am proud of my record and respectfully ask for your support for the position of councillor so that I may use my knowledge and experience with the problems of today to represent the people of Ward 2, Port Perry. ivan Parkinson I was born south of Lon- don, Ontario and close to Lucan - of financially poor parents, in 1921. My wonder- ful parents worked hard, were religious, generous and kind. My only brother CIiff, died at age 55. What I accomplished in sports, teaching, and photo- graphy and gave away via time, labour, tutoring, ber- ries, is of no importance now. EE -- I am very proud of Chris- tina, my students, what they accomplished, Norma, and those I met via growing berries. I wish the Reids, (especially Penny) on Line 8, the best. I hold no grudges, love our house in town and our dream retreat near Epsom (formerly Greenwoods). My municipal experience lasted from 1962 to 1966. (I learned considerable.) If elected this time around I will work hard and do the best job possible - by mutual agreement with "Rick" - there will be no mud slinging. I have new ideas for the new council and if elected, will do my best to have action taken re - waste of tax payer's money, not only in Port Perry but all of Scugog. These include the land fill site, the pay of employees, better co-operation with the 0.P.P. and Durham , Police, red tape, better assistance (via communication) and advertisement re - our schools, Town Hall 1873, Lake Scugog Museum, planning for the future, conservation, etc. Vote for the candidate of your choice in Port Perry and in all Scugog. PY Malcolm continued reasons: (1) Scugog always knows what it wants and our reasons are always put fairly and forcefully. (2) There is never any local dissension aired at Regional council. The decisions of our council are taken and supported fully. (3) Our success is not just luck. It is 2 per cent luck and 98 per cent plain hard work. , My basic philosophy in pursuing Township business is three fold: (1) We must stick to a pay-as-you-go policy. After five years we have taken on no debenture debt; all completed projects are paid for. (2) All local projects should be financed so as to secure the maximum provincial and federal grants available. I personally keep a tab on this part of the business by keeping in close touch with the people who administer the grants." Efforts in this direction have paid off in quick approvals and prompt payments. (3) Our several communities should be kept alive and vibrant, as this adds to the overall strength of the township. This can be done through community centres, parks, library and sport facilities. In some cases, one facility located in our main centre, Port Perry, may be enough, but in most cases they should be built in the various communities that make up the township. Some of the projects needed soon are a library expansion, works garage for Wards I and II, addition to Scugog No. 2 Fire Department in Caesarea, upgrading of the municipal office. There may be others, but these should be completed, as we can afford them, without incurring long term debts. For five years I have tactfully led the council you have elected, into making prompt decisions. If you see fit to re-elect me to head the new council, my total efforts will continue to be directed towards running an efficient organization for you. Municipal business is now my only business; as Eddie Cantor used to sing "My Time is your Time."
