Cornish Public School in Port Perry. A spokesman for ACLD Lor i said the purpose of the meet- ing is to help increase public awareness of children with learning disabilities and the problems associated with it. A documentary film called "The Puzzle Children" with Julie Andrews will be screened, and there will be a discussion period with a panel made up of Durham Board of Education chair- man Yvonne Christie; school attendance officer Edna Eastman; school nurse Shirley Hamiliton; teachers Glen Wraith and Ron King; and Noreen Bowes, a parent and past president of ACLD. The Association says that a learning disabled person is usually of average intelli- gence (some in fact may have very high IQ's) but learning is impaired because their method of learning some things is different from that of the majority. 'Children may begin. to display one or several symp- toms which can include such things as mirror printing, hyper-activity, short atten- tion spans, spelling and reading" difficulties, and auditory handicap where the actual hearing is perfect but the message to the brain is garbled or distorted. The Durham North Chap- ter is now made up of about 20 families and teacher members, and the group has: been meeting for the past two years on a regular basis at the St. John's School in Uxbridge. The Association hopes that the meeting in Port Perry will create in- terest and awareness among residents in Scugog Town- ship. It gets underway at 8:00 p.m.
