a Star Survey Malcolm leads poll, but 34% undecided With the municipal election campaign in Scugog Township now swinging into the final week, the Star recently conducted a pre-election survey of voters in the Township. A The purpose was two-fold: to get some kind of indication of which candidates the voters were leaning towards in mid-campaign, and to find out if residents indeed know that there is an election on and who the candidates are for the various seats on council. ® Three hundred phone calls were selected at random from the Port Perry and Blackstock directories, and for three days last week our pollster called the numers. . To assure confidentiality, she had only the numbers, not the names of people called. It should be stated that while polls. are widely used during campaigns at all political levels, there are built-in imprecisions that must be kept in mind when looking at the final tabulations. \* The figures listed below represent a percentage of the total number of people who responded one way or another as to who they plan to vote for. And of the people contacted, it must be said that 34 per cent indicated they were as yet undecided, and a further 13 per cent refused to indicate who they plan to support. Ten per cent said they did not know who was running. Nobody said they did not know there is a municipal election coming up. The following then are the results in terms of percentages of people who responded one way or another. This notification was given to council in a letter dated February 9, 1978, from Lind- say district manager C.R. Gray. That letter came before council at the regular meeting of February 27 and no action was taken on it. There was apparently no PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., November 8, 1978 -- 3 sources office in Lindsay because the hunt is for Town- ship residents, and there was a wish not to attract a lot of non-residents. At the meeting in March, 1977 when the present coun- cil rejected the motion to ban the hunt, a resolution was endorsed asking that the number of wildlife officers be increased during the hunt Ls . Council surprise over hunt and that there be stricter enforcement of regulations. Written permission is. required before a hunter goes onto private property, but owners have complained that enforcement is almost impossible, and approaching hunters to ask if they have: the written permission can lead to dangerous confron- tations. Judgement reserved (From page 1) continued, "seeing the word "vary" mean to completely reverse something." Mr. Kerznen argued that there are precedents where the Cabinet did order a decision reversed, and that the Cabinet has this author- ity. "If all the Cabinet can do is rescind (do away with) a decision, then it really has nothing," he said. The case on which Mr. Justice Calligan now must make his decision goes back three years when Mr. Rush sought to have a 10-acre lot severed from a farm on the Brock's Department Store is ready with warm fall fashions for men.
