McPhail said his meeting with Pilkey this week will be an important one in his oh. decision, as he wants to try to determine what Pilkey's ,motives are for seeking the chairman's job. Scugog's new mayor Jerry Taylor admitted that making up his mind as to whom he would vote for was not an: easy decision for him. . TOUGH DECISION Both Pilkey and Beath, who are actively campaign- asked for both came out to see him at his Scugog farm. Mr. Taylor told the Star that he is impressed with Pilkey's municipal ex- perience in Oshawa and at the Regional level, and also by the fact that Pilkey has led the aldermanic race in Oshawa for the last couple of elections. -However, he said his decision to go with Beath was based on the fact that Beath appears to have done a reasonable job as chair- man over the past five years. And like the other council- lors from Scugog, Uxbridge, and Brock Townships, Mr. Taylor noted that Pilkey has taken an anti-Durham stance in the past. Councillor Reg Rose has also indicated that he will be supporting Beath when the vote is taken December 6. He was a strong supporter of Mr. Beath in the last election for Regional chair- man two years ago. Gary Herrema, the newly elected mayor of Uxbridge who has completed one term - as regional councillor, also had a tough time making up his mind over who he would vote for. He admitted he PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., November 27, 1978 -- 3 'Vote for chairman may be close would not mind voting for somebody other than Beath this time around, but said he is not convinced that Pilkey would be the right chairman for all of Durham Region. Herrema's fellow regional councillor for Uxbridge, newcomer Maustyn Mec- Knight declined to comment last week on who he would be supporting. He said he will "make up his own mind" when the time comes, and would not necessarily vote the same way as other council members from the North. Mr. McKnight sug- gested that while the three northern municipalities should not get any special treatment from Durham Region or the chairman, he would hope that the chair- man would '*have an under- standing of all the areas within Durham'. The successful candidate for the $34,500 a year chair- man's job will have to win 16 of the 30 votes on Regional council. Allan McPhail was knocked out of that race on the first ballot. Pilkey, who is 33, has 'ten years of municipal govern- ment experience in the city of Oshawa, and has been a regional councillor since the formation of Durham five years ago. He is described as intelligent, articulate and one who does his homework on the issues. A survey by an Oshawa newspaper last week in- dicates that Pilkey is as- sured of eight votes out of the 11 from the city of Oshawa. One Oshawa councillor, John Howden indicated he will support Beath, and two others have not yet made up their minds.
