A party was held recently at the Prospect School to honour Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Smith on their recent marriage. Miss Alice Parry, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Parry of Port Perry officially sponsored H.M.S. '""Seabear"', and christened her with a bottle of cham- pagne, broken as she started down the way. Alice is 18 years old and attending school when she decided that arcs, torches, welding rods and masks offered the career that suited her best. 25 YEARS AGO Thursday, November 19th, 1953 District Deputy President, Larry McCarthy of Cobourg Lions Club made his official visit to the Port Perry Club. MR. and Mrs. Oliver Reader celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary at their home recently. The Minister of Health for Ontario, Dr. M. Philips, spoke to the Honeydale W.I. at their November meeting. 20 YEARS AGO Thursday, November 20th, 1958 The College of Optometry of Ontario has announ- ced that Garnet V. Gray, Uxbridge, has passed the examinations with honours, qualifying him for the 0.D. Degree. The fine autumn days we have enjoved have been the cause of the most acute water shortage in many years. A large number of wells in this area are dry and water is being hauled to supply the needs of the farmers and residents. This has led to another problem. Unauthorized persons have been found trying to force open the hydrants in order to fill their tanks. This results in damaged water hydrants, waste of water and extra pumping needed to keep the water tank filled. 10 YEARS AGO Thursday, November 28, 1968 Wed., November 27, 1978 Commissioner appointed Guiding in Port Perry secure The Guiding movement in Port Perry is secure for the next three years at least with the appointment last week of Marion Lee as district commissioner. Port Perry had been without a district commis- sioner for almost a year, and that fact had placed in jeopardy the future of about 150 Guides and Brownies. Mrs. Lee was confirmed as commissioner November 21 following a meeting with Ontario Division Commis- sioner Vera Southgate and the guide leaders. The posi- tion is for a three-year term." The fact that Port Perry did not have a district com- 'missioner threatened the guide movement here as Mrs. Southgate made it clear earlier this month in a letter to parents that the Guides and Brownies would be disbanded unless the position was filled by the end of this year. Mrs. Lee has excellent qualifications for her new C h atte rbox continued in 1978, you can bet your last dime that some municipal politicians are going to jump on the same band-wagon. Which is fine, I guess, except that councillors and aldermen should be devoting their time and energies to providing their constituents with better levels of essential services like roads, water supply, parks, snow removal and recreation facilities. What really bugs me about this thing is that topless waitresses chose to work that way, and the people who enter such an establishment do so of their own free will. The decisions are those of the individual, and the state has no right to make these choices for the individual. If you don't want to be a topless waitress, find another job. If you don't want to be served by one, find some place else to drink your beer. In the meantime let's demand that politicians at all levels concentrate on issues that mean something, rather than these stinking red herrings which seem to be so popular these days. "movement job, including considerable experience with Guides and Scouts. Her three daughters and son were all successful in guides and scouts. She spent eight years with the Scout in Greenwood, lafer organized Guides in that community, and for three years served as guide captain in Brooklin. For four years Mrs. "Lee was district commissioner for Whitby and she also served three years as the area convenor for cookie sales. Mrs. Lee, who moved with her husband to the Port Perry area two years ago, told the Star last week that she is very .pleased to be getting back into the Guide movement after an absence of three years. Mrs. Lee found out about the vacant commissioner's post almost by accident a few weeks ago. She was driving by the Scout Hall and almost on impulse decided to stop and go into the hall. Talking to some of the guides, she learned of the problems and the possible disbanding of the movement. One thing led to another and she was eventually approac- hed by Mrs. Southgate to see if she would be interested in the position. Mrs. Lee was born in Raglan and has lived almost all her life in the Durham area. In addition to her association with Guides and Scouts, she has taught Sunday School and been quite active in the U.C.W. She says she is looking forward to working with the Guides, Brownies and their parents, and is confident that she will get the support of the parents association. Letter to the Editor Dear Sir: I am writing to comment on the heading you used for page twelve in last week's Star, "A page for the Ladies'. When I realize that the material on page twelve consisted of reports from women's church groups, your labelling of it as a ladies page is very limiting. This is a rather subtle form of dis- crimination, in which you infer that the material is of interest only to women. I find this inconsistent with you usual sensitivity to human rights.
