There were close to 100 assignments in the home maintenance part of the program, everything from light house-keeping to put- ting on storm windows, cutting grass and shovelling sidewalks. As with the driving service, a nominal fee is charged for the home maintenance and is paid directly to the volunteer. Mrs. Fulford says that initially, the response to the services being offered was slow, partly because senior * citizens are very indepen- dent and didn't want any- thing to. do with something that might be considered "charity". Other seniors had apprehensions of young people working around their homes, but there have been absolutely no problems in this regard.
