Enough is enough, Dear Sir: In a time of high inflation and increasing costs I am appalled at the increases just announced for admini- stration officials of the Durham Board of Education. Restores Dear Sir: We always hear and read about the bad things young people are doing these days, but I would like to tell you about something good they are doing - Last Friday, I accidentally left my wallet in the Post Office and later that after- noon it was returned to my home by two young people, with completely untouched The Board's director Ken Munroe will receive $52,355 a year - the highest of any public servant in Durham Region. Munroe's salary is higher that eight out of ten Pre- faith contents. - not only did it contain a considerable amount of money and drivers licence and papers, etc., it had several credit cards. I was so grateful to get it back. When something like this happens it restores one's faith in the next generation. Instead of holding the line these "fat cats" in Durham - the top 11 will receive almost half a million in salaries. The actual amount in quick figuring - $483,855.00.- God only knows what fringe bene- fits and expenses are not included in these figures. The figures for the Canadian Premiers all include tax-free allowances and benefits. With pensions based on salary figures - our future debt is also increased. While cuts are made for classroom necessities and supplies, the top elite take more and more for their own pockets. An elementary teacher told me recently that they had only about $200 for the entire year to spend on approximately 30 students. They had to take money from their own pocket for supplies. What is needed in Durham Region is a watchdog with long teeth like the Auditor- General to call a halt to the seemingly never ending increases. Approximately 54 per cent of all property tax goes for education costs. We are now facing sizeable increases next year in our education taxes. As a resident of Oshawa and Durham region for more than 30 years I have seen my taxes jump endlessly - in the years 1977-78 I paid almost $6000.00 in property taxes. I urge all taxpayers to speak up and end this never- ending profilferation of spending that if not checked could lead to a tax revolt like the one in California and other states that cut taxes by more than 30 per cent. Canada's Auditor General said recently 'Fire the Wastrels" for overspending. . Enough is enough! Dean Kelly, Port Perry, Ontario. And when it was time to leave, the office staff was glad to see us go and wished us well. There just seemed to be no generation gap or class distinction from the top to the bottom. The fact that everybody works so well together, creates a 'feeling' throughout the hospital. This " 'feeling' was the most important thing about my stay in the hospital. Sure, the doctore and nurses can operate, fix our aches and breaks, prescribe the proper medicine and make us well. But, we oldsters, and I suppose in the case of younger people too, need something more than that. We need to 'feel' that we still have something to give and live for. At this moment I am thinking of the lovely old lady who is 92. . She was nursed back to health but she needed that extra 'feeling' to know that she could be independent again. This is where the Therapy Dept. took over. And when I say Therapy Dept. I mean the 'feeling' bubbled over and everybody, including the patients, were encouraging her and telling her she could do it. Well, she did it. Now, she is one happy independent lady, glad to be home with her friends. I left the hospital feeling that not just health, but my well-being was the most important thing to the staff at Port Perry Community Memorial Hospital. However, on the minus side, I observed that the - Emergency Entrance of the hospital, which faces northeast, could do with an outside windbreak. This could save energy and would also stop the blast of cold air from freezing the people and receptionist in the waiting-room. This sounds like an easy problem to remedy but I found out it was more complicated than it looks due to meetings, government bureaucracy, architects, etc $$$$$. Oh well, I guess we can't have everything. Yours truly, 'Mr. Roy Walker Smith remember when ...? 35 YEARS AGO Thursday, December 9, 1943 Gunner Mer.
