Legionaires trounce Sunderland 18-0 by Jan McAllister Tuesday night saw the Legionaires travel to Sun- derland where they had another no contest match. This time they managed to beat Sunderland 18 to 0. As the score would indicate the Sunderland team was no match for our Legionaires. Scoring for the Legionaires was Kelvin Ferguson (3), Darren Desautels (3), Ray Meisner (1), Jeff Johnstone (4), Robbie Tobin (1), Steven Lee (2), David Kemp (1), Jeff Cox (1), Vaughan McKee (1), and Mike Dick- son (1). Wednesday night the Legionaires played an ex- hibition game against an Oshawa team, Banks Construction. Although the Legionaires were a little off guard after their game the night before with Sunderland they managed to come out the victors, defeating Oshawa 2 to 1. These are the kind of games people love to watch and the boys like to play. Both teams were very well matched and both teams played very good hockey. All the scoring took place in the second period with goals being scored by Mike Dickson and Ray Meisner. Assists went to Jeff Cox and Robbie Tobin. Scoring for Oshawa was Todd Wilber assisted by Mik Kozar. Friday nights league game against Cannington was cancelled so the Legionaires played another exhibition game against Oshawa Cana- Novice Continued Menzies with 1. The Mersco Novice All- Stars would like to wish all their fans (moms and dads included) a Merry Christ- mas and to thank everyone for their support. The teams next game is at Port on Friday, December 22 against Uxbridge. dians. Again both teams played very good hockey and 'it was a pleasure to watch two teams trying very hard to gain the advantage. This time the Oshawa Canadians went home victorious, defeating the Legionaires 2 to 1. Scoring for Port Perry was Steven Lee assisted by Jeff Johnstone and Darren Desautels. Many thanks to teachers, music leaders, young parents and interested parents who co-operate so well to give encouragement, ideas, help or just attend. It is always such a happy moment when tiny tots go on stage for the first time to sing the Christmas songs, give recitations or excitedly welcome * Santa Claus. Michael Freeman and Bruce Prentice can always be' depended on to devise new methods of bringing laughter to young and old alike. Lynette Jackson proved that she has a vocal talent as well as gymnastics. The five broken dolls from the "Head" U.C.W. gave a dif- ferent atmostphere to the program when they had sung their song of concern and renewal and were then taken away by their five little owners. Even though Sunday reminded us of what winter can be, there was a good Church attendance for the best White Gift service ever given in many years. There had been lots of practice by Mrs. Madeline Cawker and her able staff of Mrs. Barbara Brown, Mrs. Carol Wilson, Mrs. Wilma John- son, Mrs. Jan Gerrow and Mrs. Faye Sanderson. Of course, there are many other young mothers who are also helping to teach. Each class sisted by Brian Workman. The Legionaires are off now until December 21 when they travel to Newcastle. This should be a real good game and it is a very impor- tant one as the Legionaires have not yet had any action with Newcastle. The Legion- aires must win this game to 'remain in first place. May we all wish the boys the best of luck. Friday night the Legion- aires will play at home 9:00 p.m. at the Scugog Arena. had a part in the very mean- ingful program including a Birthday cake and song for the baby Jesus. I'm sure the Sunday School pupils all felt that it was their own special Sunday. Rev. Clarke ex- plained the meaning of the gifts brought to Jesus. The gifts donated by the children will go into Christ- mas baskets arranged by the Scugog Planning Council or Association who will distri- bute them to needy people in the area. The loose collec- tion will be used for missions. After Church, the choir travelled to Prince Albert to again present "The Song of Christmas", along with the Prince Albert Orchestra and assisting guests. This is an ideal arrangemént for This will be an exhibition game and you can bet it will be worth watching. At this time the Legionaires would like to thank all their loyal fans, parents, coach, manager and sponsor for their kind support in 1978 and may you all have a Very Merry Christmas. They promise to play harder and better in 1979 and are striving to win the Pee Wee Championship. Good Luck boys and Merry Christmas.' News people to share their talents in the area. The children of the Island Sunday School were asked to give their teachers a written copy of the Lord's Prayer, as they know it, without refer- ence to the Bible or their parents. So far only one has been turned in. Perhaps the others will remember for the Christmas Service, which will be the last chance, for the promised award. Rev. Linstead will conduct -a special family service. Everyone and especially family groups are welcome. We realize some are having family dinners and will find it difficult. The Senior and Junior<Choirs are preparing special music and there will be a surprise feature during the service. Service stations begin metric conversion Many motorists, will be purchasing gasoline and motor oil by the litre begin- ning in January, 1979. The metric conversion of service station pumps to dispense in litres instead of gallons will be a gradual process, scheduled to be completed by the end of 1980. The petroleum industry plans to convert pumps first in the major population centres following a plan developed by their metric conversion sector committee and published two years ago by Metric Commission Canada. A tank filllup may vary GA NG from less than 50 L for small cars to over 80 L for large ones. Results of Oil Com- pany test programs in Canada and the United States using service station pumps dispensing in litres have shown that motorists adapted quickly to the changeover. Most drivers continued to buy gasoline in terms of a tank fill-up or the number of dollars worth they wanted. Other changes will be seen at service stations. Motor oil will be sold in litre con- tainers, and other items will eventually be in metric-size packages. TR ry PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, Dec. 20, 1978 -- 29 a For the Best Deals on New G.M.
