The council also voted to hike the yearly salary of the Regional chairman by. $1000, for a total of just over $35, 000. The vote, which was held at the last regular business meeting of Durham council on December 20, carried easily by a 17-11 margin and sparked the usual debate over this .issue with some councillors arguing that it was not necessary to raise their salaries, and others stating that amount of work that goes with the job makes the increase more than justi- fied. Actually, the new council was ratifying a recommen- dation made last June by the . old Durham council, which adopted the policy of setting any salary increase several months ahead of an election. The strongest opposition to the increase came from freshman councillor Ed Kolodzie (Oshawa) who suggested that members take a course in "personal money management.' Councillor Kolodzie Seagrave news by Jackie Boyle I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and may I extend my good wishes to each of you for peace and happiness in the new year. "The heart has its reasons, which reason does not know' - Author Unknown. #% FISH & THE GALLEY We wish to thank the citizens of Port Perry CHIPS suggested that the $500 a year raise, which amounts to about $8 per week after taxes, was not necessary, and individual councillors could be this money ahead simply by cutting out 'a bottle of booze, or cigarettes or a large pizza with the works." He questioned whether the amount of time spent on municipal business justified the increase, saying that council and committee meetings rarely last more than a couple of hours. That statement by Kolodzie got a rise out of Whitby councillor Jerry Fisher who said the time spent at meetings is only part of the job. Fisher said he spends a lot of time meeting and talking with constituents at all hours of the day-and night. But councillor Kolodzie pushed on with his attack against the raise in pay, and before the vote was taken stated that if it was ap- proved, he would take his $500 and set up a scholarship fund for journalism students at Durham College. *'Maybe they can look into exactly how many hours a week councillors do spend on the job." Pickering councillor Ken Matheson supported the raise, saying that no member of council is being forced to take it. He said being a municipal politician w is the only job he has, and he puts in a 50 to 60 hour week. Both Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor and councillor Reg ~Rose voted in favour of the increase. Timothy Brunton came home from London, England to spend Christmas Week with his father and family. Meanwhile, Judy, his wife, spent the holiday with her family in Bedford, England. $2.50 Advance Port Perry High School presents "Canada's Foremost Spaceage Mentalist, the incredible, 'MIKE MANDEL' Thursday, Jan.
