Many parents were out to help on Wednesday morning when the children took part in the skating next door at the arena, with warming hot chocolate after the ice; Bob and Kathy made it a very special day. The GIRL GUIDES will be out soon,-in-uniform, taking orders for Guide cookies. No money will be collected until the cookies arrive! The Bonspiel scheduled for February 3rd. is well under- way in the planning stages. Cam Porter is in charge of the Fun day which will in- clude two six end games, a dinner and dance; Saturday Bonspiel is a first for Blackstock so anyone is welcome to drop in and see how the game is played. The Couples Club met at 8:00 at the Schryburts and travelled into Oshawa to see, California Suite, then pizza was brought back to the Smiths Woods where a delightful chit-chat on several subjects brought the evening to a close. The Board of Directors of the Pine Ridge Garden Club recently met at the home of Chris Wilson to get plans un- derway for the forth-coming season. The first meeting will be held on March 6th in the Nestleton Community Centre. Anyone with questions may call Mr. Roy Grierson. Everyone in the Scugog Area interested in good gardening methods is urged to attend the March meeting. Schryburt The Local Association for Guides, Brownies and Rangers met in the Christian Education Building on Monday, January 15th with only seven members present. Commissioner Taylor opened the meeting with a short New Years Resolution Poem. The minutes were read and approved. The treasurer reported a bank balance of $218.03. After some discussion a tentative date was set for the Annual Mother and Daughter Banquet (Pot Luck) for Monday, June 4th. Also a date the end of Sep- tember was decided upon for . the next Guides ready to receive their Canada Cords. The Association is pleased to have Carol Porter as the new Cookie Convenor. Our local Girl Guides, in uniform, in the near future will be visiting homes taking orders for Girl Cookies. They will be accep- ting no money until the day they return to deliver the or- ders. Area Commissioner Ruth Nesbitt's turn is over in June. A motion was passed to send a $10.00 donation to Camp Adelaide in her name. Schryburt Inspite of the snow, over twenty ladies attended the General Meeting of the U.C.W. in the C.E. Room of the United Church on Wed- nesday at 1:00. Ruby Van Camp opened the meeting with a sing-song. Ruby Par- sons and Edith McLaughlin presented thoughts on the New Year followed by an appropriate Hymn. Eleanor Werry and Ruby Van Camp read several let- ters of 'thanks' for yearly donations to organizations and Christmas poinsettas and Ideal Books given out to shut-ins. Thelma Wright reported that fifteen plants had been distributed in the Christmas season. Eileen McLaughlin reported that four families were aided through the Operation Board Representative - Jean Goble, and social committee chairman - Aileen Van Camp. Barb thanked all who helped to make the 1978 New Year's Eve Dance a success. Many dates of importance were discussed; January 24th at trip to the ice follies in Toronto is underway, An- nual Hard Times Dance on March 10th has hired a Western Band, "Larry Adam", and on February 18th the yearly "Family Skate" will take place bet- ween 4:30 and 6:30 at the Blackstock Rink. After the business portion of the meeting, roll call was answered with, "If you had --your- life to live over would you do anything different?" The U.C.W. has committed it's services for two banquets in the near future: Junior Farmer Banquet on March 3rd, and the Shor- thorn Banquet in the spring. Edith displayed a quilt donated by Mrs. Archer, complete with backing ready to be quilted. The quilting bee will be organized by Dora Martyn so if you are interested in helping please notify her. Mrs. John Carnghan can no longer provide the beautiful arrangements that everyone in the United Church has grown accustomed to over the past ten years or more.
