. NEIL SA PCR ANTAL nD Ea | J Safety team advances in competitions "A team of four students from Port Perry High School has advanced to the inter- divisional round of the accident prevention com- petitions sponsored by the Industrial Accident Preven- tion Association. | The team members, all 4th year students, will be in competition tonight (Feb- ruary 7) in Barrie. They advanced to this competition by beating a team from Central Tech High School in Toronto last Friday. Port Perry won the Regional competition -a week ago, beating Eastdale Collegiate in Oshawa. The competition takes the form of questions directed at each student, and 16 toss-up questions with all members from each team trying to come up with the right. answer first. The team scoring the most points for the answered questions is declared the winner. Port Perry High School teacher Howard Johnson, who is coaching the team, says the questions cover all aspects of safety and acci- dent prevention in industrial, recreation, farm and home situations. And Mr. Johnson says the questions directed at the students get more -difficult as the competition goes along. 'As an added incentive, the IAPA puts up cash prizes, and so far each member of the Port Perry team has-earned about $45 for his efforts. If the team is successful in Barrie, they will go on to compete in the area cham- pionship later this month, and ultimately could end up in province wide play-offs in April. The team members from Port Perry High School are Peter Breznika (electronics) Allen Goss (drafting); Joseph Macedo (electricity) and Dan Twomey (elec- tronics). While we are in the midst of hockey and all the other winter sports, it's difficult to turn our thoughts to Spring and Summer. But plans must be made early, if we hope for success in future 4 projects. So now it's soccer for boys 6 to 14 years of age. Again this is where the parents must back it and be the inspiration. Jim Callan of McLaren's Beach is con- ducting the island interests to combine with the whole Port Perry area. According- ly there will be a meeting for parents at the Latcham Centre Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. We must plan to keep our boys busy with interesting activi- ty during the summer. The club hopes to get started in May with 2 outings a week consisting of 1 for practice and 1 for playing other groups. A piece of land north of the arena has been allott- ed. The initial fee will be $12. but for those who join later it will be $15. Here is a great opportunity, so parents mark your calendar for Feb. 15. We formerly heard of Barbara Underhill of Oshawa and Paul Martini of Woodbridge who brought home a gold medal last year from Germany when they entered the Jr. World which was being held for the first time. Now they are the Sr. Canadian Champions. It is interesting to note that Anna and Rick Stephens won this same title 10 yrs. ago in Toronto. Rick lives on the Island and has taught figure skating in Port Perry to many of our children. Rev. Linstead was back on Sun. after his vacation in the Florida Keys. * FEBRUARY 9 & 10 When was the last time . Someone jammed your locker?
