Blackstock area news by Bethany Schryburt Seniors Card Party-at the Community Hall on evening entertained 'Sixteen tables with winners: 1- Bessie McCullough-88; 2- Marjorie Tennant-81; 3- Alvin- Spencer-79; 4-Carl Gimblett-79; 5-Ray Brown- 76; 6-Meta Swain-76; and low Edna Kerry. Looking for some area 'action' this weekend in Blackstock, should be easy with the couples club holding a sleigh ride, Saturday evening, call Jim or Leane Colmer (985-3455) or support the Broomball players at a great dance at the Recrea- tional Centre. The area Beavers, twenty three in all, with parents, leaders and guests for a total of seventy-five enjoyed a skating party at the Black- stock rink on Wednesday from six to seven. After the skating everyone helped themselves to cookies and pop or coffee. If you have a keen interest in today's youth and know- ledge of the Girl Guide format and rules, the Black- stock Guides would ap- preciate a volunteer leader to take a place in the organi- zation starting in September, call Joyce Taylor now for more information. The 1st Cartwright Guide Company had their Annual Skating Party on Friday, February 9th. Each Guide brought a friend and enjoyed the winter sport. Brownie, Guide, Ranger, Cub, and Scout Thinking Day Church Parade is to be held at St. John's Anglican Church in Blackstock at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, February 25th. This will be a special ecumenical service for all present and past members of the Scout-Guide movement and their family and friends. Guides will soon be out in uniform, knocking on doors for orders for cookies to be delivered in April, no money until the cookies arrive. The Schryburt family travelled to Ottawa for the weekend, staying with 'Mr. - and Mrs. Jim Fleming and family. Sunday was spent at the home of Mrs, R. Schry- burt also in Ottawa. Gord and Barb Russell of Windsor spent the weekend with their son Don Russell, JoAnne, Dana and Kyle at Cadmus, taking in the big Hockey game at the Gardens in Toronto on Saturday evening. Mr. Walter Lawrence is still a patient at the Port Perry hospital after suffer- ing an attack two weeks ago. 'Frances Grove celebrated her 8th birthday on Saturday with friends, Lynda Parsons, Esther Kelly and Julie Byers at McDonalds in Oshawa Oshawa symphony to play concert at Town Hall 1873 The second appearance of Oshawa Symphony Orches-. tra in Town Hall 1873 this season will take place on Saturday, March 3. This particular concert should be an exciting one, and the program should be of a familiar and popular nature, since the evening is dedicated to the American composer George Gershwin and his music. Gershwin was born in Brooklyn, New York, 1898 and died at a young age in 1937. During his short life span he created some of the most popular melodies and songs, played and sung all over the World. - His greatest achievements during his short but creative period were his two major works, Rhapsody in Blue and his famous negro folk-opera, Porgy and Bess. Close to seventy enjoyed the ice and the Hot Dogs, tarts, ice cream, and drink that followed. Bowmanville ladies provid- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., February 21, 1979 -- ¢ ed a pot luck lunch, goody bags, door prizes, and an exciting game played with mixed teams from Black- stock and Bowmanville ladies. Everyone had a terrific time, especially, Suzanne Rioual who was on the winning team which had only three players. The Bowmanville ladies are invited back to Blackstock on March 26th and hopefully will have as enjoyable a day. The two kindergarten classes at Cartwright Central Public School grew so large through the year that starting Monday, February 19, a third class will be formed in the after- noon to be taught by the morning kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Kiezebrink. The three classes will have approximately twenty students which should improve the teacher-student ratio, greatly.
