They now compete in COSSA on Satur- day, February 31. On Tuesday, February 20th they doubled the Redmen of Bowmanville 78-39 on the 19 point effort of Gord Simmonds. Since switching to the forward position Simmonds has blossomed as a scorer. The game was not a very exciting one as Port had things pretty much their own way. The team did receive a scare when captain George Cope was injured early in the game. He did not return to the match because the Redmen were so much better than the home team that he was nét needed. Scott Wilbur and Mike Patton along with Simmonds played excellently. But perhaps the best players in the game were guards Dennis Franssen and Wade Oosterman, two speed- sters who made their presence felt. Simmonds led the Port Perry offence with his 19 points and Mike Patton had 17. Rob Morris, Redmen's 'super sub' had 16 points coming off the bench. Wade Oosterman hit double figures for the first time in the year when he had ten. Scott Wilbur, who has improved defensively had six points. George Cope, Dennis Franssen and Greg Fedyk all had two each. The Port Perry defence forced 29 steals in the game. Wilbur Simmonds and Oosterman all had six. Morris led the rebounders with eight and Patton grabbed seven. Wilbur had six. Cope and Simmonds had four. Oosterman and Lodi Raffin had two and one respectively. Henry W, Block On Thursday, February 22nd, the Redmen hosted the Eastdale Eagles in their first playoff game. Port Perry took a 77-55 win. Earlier in the year Port had scored 102 points against the same Eagles. In the first half the Redmen played atrociously. They could not hit on any of their shots. Two free throws with three seconds left in the half gave Eastdale a 31-30 lead. Early in the third quarter it became evident that Port wanted to advance so the 'Big Red Machine' slipped into gear. Four straight steals by Port Perry converted into scores as they jumped into a nine point lead which they maintained to the end of the period. Bob Ireland, the junior team captain who has been eligible for post-season competition, started the last quarter and looked a little shaky. Later in the week Port Perry coach Arend quickly and continued that Dekker would comment "adding Ireland to the bench has helped. His is a whale of Late in the game Port Perry coach put five non- starters on the court and let them finish the job. Most of them did well. Final score saw Port Perry with 74 and GL Roberts with 47, George Cope threw in 17 for the Redmen followed by Wilbur's 16. Mike Patton, who fouled out with 56 seconds left in the third, had 15. Simmonds, who was a big player for Port through- out the day, had twelve. Rob Morris had seven. Fedyk had four-and Ireland two. The Redmen totalled 51 rebounds, Patton leading-- with 14. Cope and Morris had ten each. Wilbur had eight. Patton and Wilbur had five steals each and Simmonds and Ireland had four each. The final game was the most dramatic and enter- taining of the season. Pickering Trojans had upset the Henry Street Hawks earlier in the day. - The game started off way throughout. Pickering held a 16-12 lead after eight minutes but Port edged an asset to bring off the _ ahead 35-33 at the half. bench". In the last quarter Port Perry had total command over the Eagles. LOSSA On Saturday, February 24th, the Redmen met the GL Roberts Lakers in the first game of the LOSSA cham- pionships at Durham Col- lege. After a slow start in the first half Port came on again in the second to swamp the Lakers. Greg Fedyk, Gord Simmonds and Scott Wilbur all missed shots early. But in the last- half when the chips were down they all regained their scoring touch. Especially Wilbur who had fourteen points in the second after getting two in the first. Simmonds also shone in the final period. Rob Morris added a free throw later in the quarter to give the Redmen a 52-51 lead. Morris is the key to Port Perry's bench strength and the coach later paralleled him to retired Boston Celtic great forward John Havlicek. The lead changed hands frequently in the last frame. Late in the game Port Perry utilized an excellent time killing freeze on the ball forcing Pickering to foul Bob Ireland with six seconds remaining. Coach Arend Dekker called a time out at that point. Ireland missed the shot and then Pickering called their final time out with four seconds left. When the Trojans attemp- KL). teed. LAU SAVE a J SAVE . .
