Scugog ladies find fitness fun For over five years a group of ladies from Scugog Township have gathered in the Latcham Community Centre in Port Perry for some fun and fitness. Mrs. Riet Orde, who is a licensed fitness teacher has attended workshops in Toronto and currently teaches at the YWCA in Oshawa and a night school fitness course at the Port Perry High School. During the class time, Mrs. Orde says they try to touch all parts of the body, beginning with a warm up program to reduce any chance of injury. To add some variety to the exercises and induce some added interest Mrs. Orde employs the use of balls, music and "Clickers". Clickers are small wooden weights that the ladies click together in a variety of ways to tone up their muscles. Many of the exercises are designed mainly for flexibil- ity and stretching. Fol- lowing the hour-long pro- gram which concludes with either Scottish or Disco dancing, the ladies relax on the floor with their eyes closed for a few minutes while Mrs. Orde prepares the coffee. Before calling it a day they take just a few minutes to catch up on their conver- sation and get ready to face the world. "It really helps when the ladies are enthusiastic the way these ones are," Mrs. Orde said. - Currently the membership rests at 12 but is usually closer to twenty. Mrs. Orde says that the weather was responsible for the low membership this session. The course was delayed due to the storms in the earlier part of the year. The membership rates are $19.50 for 15 weeks and the course is open to all ages. The usual range is from 20 to 60, as those over 60 find some Concentration seems to be the key for these two local ladies as they move in time to the background music. Exercising can be tedious but using a partner makes things just a little more enjoyable. That's right girls, arms back, now swing -and bend. 5. oe of the exercises are too strenuous. . Membership is not limited to Port Perry as is evidenced by the fact that many of the members hail from outside the town, Greenbank, Prince Albert, Seagrave and Blackstock, just to name a few. Nera Bloemen and Gwen Culbert have been with the fitness class since it's incep- tion in March of 1973. Another member, who has been coming regularly for just-two years, claims that she has lost 4' from her waist and 2" from the tops of her legs. I look forward to it every week," said Glenys Windsor, "It's a lot of fun." Monica Efford is a new member, who at her first meeting had this to say, "It was great. I didn't do too well today but I'll do better at the end." The current session should run until about the end of May after which the next class will begin sometime in the beginning of September. While exercising, Mrs. Orde suggest that you sing along with the record, "then you don't forget to breathe." story and photos by Carlene Kirby Mrs. Riet Orde demonstrates a new exercise to the ladies in her weekly fitness class held at the Latcham Community Centre. it certainly holds true as a new member is given With a little help from our friends we'll all get by. assistance by a two year veteran.
