The contest, held on Sunday, March 25, in Port Perry was the first game of the best two of three final series for the Port Perry Broomball Associa- tion championship. Ellicott's performance almost overshadowed an equally brilliant one by Port Perry goalie Keith Fraser. It was Fraser who kept Port in the game, especially in the first, period when Utica threatened on several occasions. The game's opening goal was scored by Ellicott when he was set up in front of the net by Henton who was stationed in the corner. It was Henton who retrieved his linemate's rebound before passing to him The opening period was dominated by Utica but they could manage just one - marker. They did an excel- lent job of stopping C & B's . vaunted offense which featured league scoring leader Rob Evans and our® the last period but it was other marksmen in the top ten scoring. Evans did draw an assist when Don Phinney tied the score at one at the 7:05 mark of the second period. The play came on a 2-on-1 break while Port Perry was short- 'handed. Play tightened up until late in the period when Ellicott netted the winner with 1:15 to play. Fraser made the original save on Henton but was foiled the second time. Ellicott had apparently popped his third in early in Malmont Atoms win consolation trophy by Carol Wilbur On Saturday, March 24 the Malmont Farm Atoms travelled to Port Hope for their annual tournament. A rather vehement argument took place for several seconds. For the first eight minutes of the final frame it ap- -peared that Port Perry would tie the score as they " put lots of heat on the Utica goaltender Don Card and his defence. Card, the third best - netminder in the league with a 1.35 goals against average, was forced to make several big stops but he was equal to the task each time. Another mild controversy % 7 arose when the time keeper allowed the clock to run on several seconds late in the contest when it should have been stopped. Port's obvious disputes were upheld as the timer was stopped for about nineteen seconds while play resumed. With 1:26 remaining in the opening contest Port Perry pulled Fraser in favour of an extra attacker. They had numerous great scoring opportunities but fell short with some superb goalten- ding by Card. Card got little support from his 'delence who failed in' the dying seconds to clear the ball, When they did clear on two ® occasions they became over anxious and were called for icing. Fortunately for Utica C & B failed to put the contest on even terms, Utica coach Dennis Symes a believed that the win was. due to his team's solid two- way effort. 'Everybody played both forward and backward, That's the only way to beat C & B," he stated.
