Heron The sympathy of the community goes out to the Hopkins family in the death of Miss Mary Hopkins. Mary's home has always been in the Ashburn area and she will be missed by her many friends: There was a record atten- dance in the adult Bible Class last Sunday morning which means the church school is growing but there is room for more at 10 a.m. every Sunday. Rev. McEntyre's message last Sunday was continuing the series 'Life under the rule of God" and was entitled "four kinds of religion". Misses Julie Emm, Diane Lehman, Karri Death and Elaine McKnight sang "The Sunshine of Jesus'. and the Sr. Choir sang "I'm just a singing pilgrim". Service next Sunday at 11:15 a.m. There was a P.A. system installed in the church last week. Next Saturday morning at 9 a.m. there will be a tree planting bee at the churchyard. Come and bring your shovel. Miss Edith Gostie of Toronto spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. W. Hopkins. We welcome Miss Betty Gardiner back from her trip to Mexico and to her new home in the village. Last Tuesday afternoon the ladies of the bible class and W.M.S. met at the home of Mrs. E. Heron to honour Miss Chrissie Simpson with a personal shower and to extend good wishes prior to her wedding to Dr. John McKinney in April. Don't forget next Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. is the fashion show being held in the community centre. Admission is only $1. per person and it promises to be a very interesting afternoon. A very interesting horti- culture meeting was held in Brooklin United Church hall last Wednesday evening when there was a good number of Ashburn members attending. Mrs. Douglas Ashton of Ashburn who has a beautiful Iris garden at their home, spoke on the different kinds of Iris' and gave lots of good tips on how to grow them and how to prepare them for an Iris show. Miss Gibb Marlow of Brooklin spoke on Roses and how to grow them, There was a plant auction and Mr. Ken Brown of Ashburn was the Auctioneer, along with lots of humour to liven up the meeting. He gave some good tips on each plant as he put it up for sale. The next meeting will be April 25th and will be the daffodil show. Utica news by Vera Brown Church Service this week will be at Epsom at 11:30 a.m. Sunday School at Utica will be at 10:00 a.m. U.C.W will meet April 10th at 8 p.m. at Epsom if the water is cleared out of the basement by then. There were 15 tables of euchre in the hall on Friday evening. Lucky winners wre as follows: Ladies - 1st - Nerta Master, 2nd - Marg Acker and low Vera Brown. Men - 1st - Doug Stiver, 2nd Charles Clarke and low Les Meyers. Freeze-out winners were Jim Evans and Annie Johnston with Ab Timms and Caroline Parish coming in second. There will be another euchre in two weeks. This should be the last hockey report for this season. Congratulations to Mark Kendall who is goalie for Swamp Garage Atoms House League who were the champs for the year. Mike Sutcliffe and his team U.A.W. came in 2nd. The Pee Wee team coached by Bill Brown were runner-ups. The Atom All-Stars with Lee Wilbur were champions at the Oshawa Little N.H.L. Minor Atom Tournament on the weekend. And last but not least, we have All- Ontario Midget 2. Cham- pions with players in Utica. Congratulations boys, it was a victory well earned. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Sutcliffe and Sherry called on his parents on Sunday. Mrs. Roy Sutcliffe and Doris Bray were in Oshawa last week. Mr. and Mrs. George Harper called on Mr. and Mrs. Ross Smalley at Sand- ford on Sunday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Hinch- cliffe of Toronto were week- end guests with Mr. and Mrs. Eric Carre and family. Mr. Trevor Carre of Toronto and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Daniels of Unionville visited with the Carres on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. George Harper were Sunday lun- cheon guests of his mother Mrs. Delia Harper. On Saturday evening Mrs. Mildred Thompson and Mrs. Phyllis Clarke attended the Junior Skating champions Ice Show at Woodville. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Donnelly visited with Mrs. Thompson one afternoon and Mrs. Thomp- son visited her mother Mrs. Jim Miller at Mount Albert on Sunday. The Community Club are holding a dance on Saturday evening in the Hall featuring the Log Cabin Boys. Mrs. Doug Geer and Bradley were Sunday luncheon guests with" Mr. and Mrs. Murray Geer. Mrs. Dora Geer was a Saturday dinner guest with Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Geer. Happy Birthday Dora. It's nice to see Scott Wilbur out and around after his bout with pneumonia last week. Police Report MOTORCYCLE MISHAP A 32-year old Blackstock area man suffered a broken collar bone in a motorcycle accident April 1 in downtown Port Perry. Police report that Gordon Wallace apparently lost control of the machine as he accelerated west on Queen Street near Water Street. STEREO STOLEN A cassette stereo valued at $300 was reported stolen from a van owned by a Nestleton area man on March 31. Police report that the stereo is a Pioneer FM cassette model. [2]
