PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, April 25, 1979 -- 15 ~ Blackstock and area news by Joyce Kelly Mrs. Rita Schryburt of Ottawa spent the Easter weekend at the Larry Schryburt home. Thursday, April 19th the morning and afternoon sessions of Blackstock Nursery School enjoyed a tour of the kitchens at the Mother's Pizza Place in Oshawa. Twenty-eight children and eight adults also helped themselves to pizza and pop after the tour. JoAnne Russell and Dana returned home Friday evening after a week in her hometown of Windsor. JoAnne's parents Stan and Kay Bondy of Windsor spent the weekend in Cadmus. Cartwright has been honoured by the efforts of two of our young people once again. Cathy Clark, a grade 8 student and Craig Paisley, a Grade 6 student at C.C.P.S. each placed in the Mount Albert Public Speaking Contest sponsored by the Lions' Club and moved on to the Zone Finals at Mark- ham. Cathy won second prize of $50. in the Girls' Section with her speech on "Male Chauvenism" and Craig likewise took second place in the Boys' Section with "My Trip to Pittsburg'. Heartiest congratulations to you both. Mr. and Mrs. Will Dugam, Mr, and Mrs. Ron Little of Lochlin were Sunday visitors of Mrs. Wilbert Archer. During the week Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Corry of Little Britain visited their aunt. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Saddler of Nestleton were Sunday evening dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Samells. A welcome to the area is extended to Mr. and Mrs. Bernie Gotham who have moved to the former Wes Sweet Farm. At the Senior Citizen's Card Party on Tuesday evening there were 24 tables with the following winners - 1. Norman Birkett-87; 2. Violet Luke-84; 3. Carl Wright-83; 4. Olive Gimblett- 83. 5. On Saturday evening the 21st Annual At Home of the Cartwright High School was very successful. Irwin Smith provided lovely music for the dance. Tammy DeMerchant was chosen Queen with Linda Duivestyn, first princess, and Lois Van Camp as second princess. Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Asselstine were the honoured guests at a family dinner party prior to the At Home on Saturday evening in honour of their forth- coming fortieth wedding anniversary. Guests at the dinner which was held at Steve's Seafood and Steak- house, Oshawa were Mr. and Mrs. Al Asselstine, Guelph, Low- ONE OF THE GREAT AY Mr. and Mrs. Les Asselstine, Kitchener, Mr. Floyd Assel- stine, and Miss Ruth Smitherman, Mr. Colin Asselstine and Miss Judy Malin. Congratulations Vera and Vern on this happy occasion. Mrs. Chaplin, Hilisdale Manor, Oshawa was a Sunday guest with Vern and "¥eraand happy household of guests. Mr. and Mrs. Al Assel- stine, Tania, Michael, and Mark spent the weekend with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Joe Frey. Just as the birds return in spring looking very fit so have most of our residents vacationing in the Sunny South returned likewise look- ing very fit and well. Welcome back to all of you. On Wednesday evening quite a number of Cart- wright students and their parents attended the Scugog Schools Annual Musical Evening held at the Port Perry High School. Taking - part were the recorder group directed by Miss Morton, the gospel Singers, and the C.C.P.S. Band under the direction of Mrs. Kiezebrink, the "Cartwright Sounds, directed by Mrs. Dixon and the High School Choir directed by Mr. R. Ashton . The music was all well done and a credit to the teachers and pupils of the A Township. Without a doubt the highlight of the evening was the number 'Mine Eyes have Seen the Glory" per- formed by the three bands and all the choirs. All in all, a super evening. BLACKSTOCK NURSERY SCHOOL MEETING Blackstock Nursery School met on April 10 in the Nursery School Room at the Rec Centre. Thirty members enjoyed the film "The Value of Play" presen- ted by Judy Crawford as a follow-up to the March Parent Education program Jackie Danter read the minutes of the March meeting followed by the Treasurer's report given by Joanne Lee. Beth Schryburt suggested (Turn to Page 22) Parent education seminar The third in a series of Parent Education seminars sponsored by the Blackstock Nursery School will be held April 25, at 7:30 p.m. in the library at Cartwright Public School. The topic is "Your Child's Health and Safety" and the guest speakers will include Dr. John Stewart speaking on your Child's FACTORY FURNITURE CLEAR-OUT health and immunization. Mr. Bob DeShane, an ambulance attendant will demonstrate home emer- gency measures. Barbara Mansfield, a Public Health Nurse with the Durham Region will speak on Nutri- tion. Have tantrums at the table? Come and learn how to tame your Cookie Monster. All are welcome. Please come and sit in on this very informative evening. The next in the series of seminars will be held on May 15 when Jack Gardiner of the Durham Board of Education speaks on "Discipline - A Personal Point of View".
